The last remaining cinema building in Newton le Willows has gone, to be replaced by yet more housing.

It's rather like the scheme in Sheffield to bulldose the city's last working foundry (note working foundry - skilled craftsmen are still employed there) to put up yet more 'luxury' apartments which, if my last visit to Sheffield is any guide, is the last thing the place needs.

Why do they need to put up more 'luxury' apartments when 'A Splash Of Colour' is transforming the Parc Hill Flats Estate into just that? Or have they now run out of cash?

Either way it's a shame when an old building like it demolished. There's an art-deco style Cinema building in Bridgend, South Wales that was being used as a bingo hall for many years. But that's been boarded up and unused for years.

There was opposition to the Curzon demolition but as you can imagine it was over-ruled.

They demolished the Vulcan Foundry (locomotive works) a couple of years ago, to build houses but it is still just a pile of rubble.

So now we have no factory, no industrial units and not even any houses either.

Fascinating, many thanks, there was a Curzon cinema in Liverpool but that was changed into a Supermarket.

Where the word Curzon comes from, was it a chain of cinemas similar to Odeon?

I don't know if it was a chain. I did some googling a few years ago and drew a blank at the time. I don't know if this company Curzon Cinemas is related.

That's a small chain of independent, "art house" cinemas in and around London. They aren't related (AFAIK) to other Curzon cinemas around the country

I don't know why some cinemas are called Curzon but they do usually tend to be independent cinemas, not part of one of the major chains. Similar with the ones called The Roxy or Rialto, they are usually independent as well
