name='Steve Crook']The cover of this week's Radio Times has a picture of Brannagh as Wallander with the caption Inspector Norse

    Ah yes...that reminds me.

I recently went on a wild camping trip to the Scottish highlands with a Swedish friend of mine.

In comparing equipment I was raving about my PrimaLoft sleeping bag but he was immovable in his belief that his down filled bag was the only option.

It was the first time I ever encountered the formidable Norse Faith of the Eider.

    Er...I'll get my parka.

Just finished watching Ep 3. It's brilliantly shot and acted, but SLOW SLOW SLOW!

I have recorded last night's episode due to being at work, so please everyone, don't give away any 'spoilers'. Thanks.

I picked up the book of the first episode screened in Tesco for £3.50 and, even though you've seen it, I'm still not going to tell you what happens in the end

If it's like the ending to the book of The Crimson Rivers there will be no spoilers!

having now watched all three episodes, I've revised my earlier opinion of Branagh. He is good, but I find the Wallender character somewhat unbelievable. I'm surprised he is not constantly taken into custody for being a vagrant. But the timing of the whole thing is still excrutiating, even more so than the first episode. An hour would have been long enough for each episode.

I tuned into BBC4 the other night to watch what I thought was a repeat of Kenneth Branagh's Wallander, only to find that it was the original Swedish version.

Did anyone see both versions and how did you think they compared? I probably preferred the Swedish show but it was extremely gory at times, Having said that I was very impressed with Kenneth Branagh in our version, I thought he gave an extemely impressive performance.

Both are extremely good. The Swedish version is tinged with sorrow as the actor playing Wallander's daughter, Linda, committed suicide in 2007 - Johanna Sällström.

I would agree. Both versions are very true to the original books.

I didn't know about the suicide of the actress who played Linda, that's very sad.

The Wallander books are amongst the best police procedurals on the market and I agree that both adaptions have been done extremely well.

I watched both Swedish episodes this week and thought them excellent. The actor playing Wallander is very good and both episodes were top class. I also love the Branagh version, it may lack the melancholy feel that the Swedes do better than anyone else, but that whole series was the best thing on UK TV last year IMHO.

I too, was unaware of Johanna Sällström's death. She was a very fine actress.

BBC4 set the scene for its original Wallander "season" with a superb documentary presented by John Hervey:

WHO IS KURT WALLANDER? (BBC Scotland, 2008)

produced and directed by Elaine Donnelly Pieper

I share enthusiasm for Kenneth Branagh as Wallander, but would prefer DVDs of the equally-acclaimed Swedish films.

My mother is Swedish. DVDs can be a rare opportunity for older people, born in another country, to remain familiar with their original language.

The DVD sets, available through Amazon.co.uk., are expensive:

    1. Wallander Collection 1 (£80-99p) 4-DVD set

    2. Wallander Collection 2 (£80-99p) 4-DVD set

    3. Wallander Series 9-13 (£80-99p) 5-DVD set

I checked up on those when I was looking to buy the Swedish series .... it won't bother Maurice or his mother but for the rest of us Swedish language deficient folks they don't have English subtitles.

I expect many people (including me) would love a set, but I am not paying £80 for them.

I wonder if we'll get to see the earlier series with Rolf Lasgaard as Wallander.
