Clarkson told to reopen footpath by Isle of Man home

Television presenter Jeremy Clarkson has been ordered to reopen a footpath through his property after a public inquiry on the Isle of Man.

The BBC Top Gear presenter sparked protests from ramblers when he diverted a path on land at his holiday home, a lighthouse on the Langness peninsula.

He claims there had never been any rights of way across the land.

But a public inquiry concluded he interfered with a right of way and he must now reinstate the path.

Mr Clarkson has 28 days to appeal against the ruling.

Health Minister David Anderson MHK, who was acting transport minister at the time the inquiry began, said anyone was able to object to the report's findings.

He said: "If any objections are received, and are not subsequently withdrawn, the matter has to be brought to the High Court for resolution."

    'Horrible experiences'

Mr Anderson said the inquiry inspector, Roy Hickey, said "strong and persuasive evidence" had been put forward by members of the public that they had the right to use the paths on Langness.

He said that all of the paths on Langness, apart from five, should be dedicated as public rights of way.

The five paths that may remain private include three leading from the lighthouse to the shore south and south east of the lighthouse, a fourth running across the peninsula and a fifth crossing the golf course.

Mr Clarkson's wife, Frances Cain, said the family had received unwanted attention from passers-by and put a fence up to protect their privacy.

"This is the place that I brought my family, my husband and my children, with such a happy heart, and we've had such horrible experiences," she said.

However, the report's outcome was welcomed by Rushen MHKs Juan Watterson, Quintin Gill and Phil Gawne.

All three MHKs said in a joint statement that they felt it was a "victory for common sense".

..and as everyone on the Island knows, when God was handing out common sense he left the MHK's til last.

This is a purely political decision to let everyone who isn't Manx by birth ('come overs') know their place.

Didn't Madonna have the same problem in Wiltshire?

I suppose its the double edged sword of being both rich and famous? Obviously Jeremy's rants & opinions are not to everybody's taste and this might be a chance to get back at him? The council however seem oblivious to the fact that as a personality that the area will attract more than people walking their dog but assorted nuts wanting to watch the Clarkson tribe in their cage, and if this upsets the Clarksons (like Madonna) they will move out and take with them the money they must spend in the local economy.

Then again maybe Clarkson should have read his title deeds a bit more closely?

There is no national speed limit on the Isle of Man, on the open roads you can drive as fast as your motor will take you (built up areas excepted). So possibly the ideal holiday island for Clarkson!

To agree with Clarkson about anything is worrying although I'm sure Torq knows more about the Isle of Man than the rest of us. Even if he is in the right I take great pleasure in passers by looking in at Clarkson playing with his toy cars and reading the Beano. The man is an oaf and should be treated like an exhibit in a freak show.

I think that, while allowing the Right Of Way the authorities did keep the footpath away from the disputed area a little and will allow a fence by the wall.

No true actually. The Mountain Road is the only one without speed restrictions.

I will bow to your insider knowledge ...so do rural roads have a speed limit after all? I always thought The Isle of Man had rejected national speed limits for unrestricted roads. Is the Mountain Road the same as the TT route? I gather lots of folk visit the island to drive fast, I think many assume they can also drive recklessly and are surprised to find themselves being sent to jail for dangerous driving!!

All the roads except the Mountain Road have speed limits as directed by the House of Keys legislature. The Mountain Road is the part of the TT course that runs between Ramsey and Douglas, the rest of the course i.e. from the end of the Mountain Road, on the outskirts of Douglas, through the town, out to Peel and on to Ramsey are subject to the defined restrictions. There are very specific times when the TT course is closed to normal traffic, other than during races i.e. blocks of time during practice week (the week before the TT races) Mad Sunday when ordinary punters get to go 'mad' on their bikes and drives as fast as they like (a very good day to be away from the course).

Strange how one can claim ownership of land that has been around since the begining and stop people from walking on it.I know how this comes about, its just a mere observation. This 'peckerhead' shoots animals for fun..... Perhaps its true what they say about dudes who own big things, bikes, cars, dogs and such like.

Jeremy can rest assured that if I'm ever in the IOM I will give him a wide berth as I do his TV programmes and newspaper columns.

Dont worry, it would be very easy to avoid, you really do have to want to go there deliberately to bother him.

I've only ever seen Jeremy Clarkson in Top Gear and I like him in that, but I wouldn't go out of my way to be a stickybeak. But then, that applies to any other 'celebrity', too -- I'm not particularly interested in seeing where they live, or trying to get a glimpse of them. What for? Whenever I come across one accidentally I automatically look twice, but that's as far as it goes. To my mind, in private life they are private people the same as anyone else.
