Sad indeed, I was taught many many moons ago by an old Geordie (long gone - RIP Pop) that the correct way to drink it was in a half pint glass (not mug) and to keep topping it up as you went along. And that a new bottle demanded a new glass,. Will there be a special vintage of the last batch brewed "at home" ?

I'm really surprised at this as i thought 'newcky brown' was one of the more popular 'real ales'? I don't understand the popularity of lager at all? To me it tastes of hairspray infused soda water!

That reminds me of a Canadian joke about American beer.

I agree to a large extent but there a some interesting continental lagers appearing in pubs recently. I usually drink bitter or Guiness but sometimes enjoy a pint (or 3) of lager in the summer, I particularly like Staropramen, Leffe and some of the 'white' lagers.

Mind you with Star at £4.50 a pint in some pubs in town you need to take out a mortgage to buy a round!

Staropramen isn't bad for a lager, i always have a pint or two when i visit the russian themed 'revolution' bars in liverpool before sampling the vodka menu! I have to admit that i cannot stand the white lagers-they taste of hairspray, soda water and 'fruit salad' penny sweets! The only time that i've enjoyed lager was in a small pub in munster, germany in 2001 but then again i was half cut so probably would have enjoyed a pint of meths!

Notice how most lagers have to be served freezing cold.

That way they numb your taste buds and so most drinkers don't realise that they don't taste of anything except some nasty chemical concoction.

Give me a real beer every time. Not served "warm" as some detractors claim. It should be served at cellar temperature which is usually a few degrees below room temperature. That way you can still taste it but it's still cooling and refreshing

Whatever happened to traditional bottles of Brown Ale ?

AFAIK Harvey's of Lewes seem to be the last brewers of this unless you know otherwise ?

Never touched any of these Ale's, Bitter's. Mild's or Stout's but I'm quite partial to a bottle of this nectar....

I do like Hoegaarden but nearly collapsed when charged a few coppers short of £5 for a pint of draught in Leeds last year
