Just arrived home from Cardiff after seeing The Moody Blues in St Davids Hall.

We had a wonderful evening, The Moodies were in fine form getting three standing ovations during the performance. (quite an achievement considering the average age of the audience!)

A great, but underrated group in this country. My favourite song of theirs is New Horizons, which features on my "My Music" thread. They have achieved the highest accolade,of appearing in The Simpsons (Viva Ned Flanders) where they were second act to a tribute band called Satin Knights in Las Vegas .

    Justin Hayward's voice is peerless.

Let's see. I saw them three nights in a row in July. Once in March. And, yes, twice in the summer of 2009. And I'm psyched for their upcoming American tour in 2011. I rather fancy myself as a major fan. What a glorious sound they produced in their heyday yet they're a splendid live band as well. Unfortunately their concert reportoire is somewhat limited to the material written by the remaining members so some key songs are not on their set-list.

I would love to see them do a show with their long-departed keyboard man Mike Pinder but I think we can safely rule that out. Justin Hayward described his leaving the group as a "violent" act and, at another time, suggested that dropping out of a band is like walking away from a family. There's no coming back. Well, I should be grateful that I'm not in his family! I guess they're not called The Moodies for nothing.

I own two of their albums. One I listen to fairly regularly - The Magnificent Moodies, and the other "Every Good Boy Deserves Favour" I can safely say I haven't heard all the way through since the day after I bought it. But I bought it for "The Story in Your Eyes" which was used to such brilliant effect in "Life On Mars", and the rest of the album is simply not like that, it's more like ... the Moody Blues. But "The Story in Your Eyes" remains an astonishing piece of pop, about 10 years ahead of its time. Maybe I should give the rest of the album a go ...

Yes, as well as Justin Hayward let's not forget Denny Laine's contribution to the group. I love both Nights in White Satin and Go Now.

But in Justin's career he's never been better than on the War of the Worlds LP with Forever Autumn.

Good to see the Moodies are still going strong

yes ... Lovegod is a bit of a Moodies nut too..... Â*amazing what they have achieved... I put them up there with the Beatles. Â*I think of mike pinder as the Â*John Lennon of the group and in fact they were mates for a time. Â* Â*John bought a melotron and put it in his musicroom in Weybridge in Surrey. Â* No mean fete as those things weighed a ton.

Of course the melotron was the secret behind the Moodies music... that haunting... string like sound

and Â*Marky Â*is right... Justin... wot a guy

I'm pleased to learn of other fans on this forum. From the moment I heard Nights In White Satin in 1967 their music has been a big part of my life.

I was fortunate to see the classic lineup (with Mike Pinder and dear old Ray Thomas) in 1973 and now 37 years later they still deliver the goods on stage.

Go Now was their only UK number 1 hit in 1965,before Justin Hayward joined the group. Surprisingly,Nights In White Satin was their last fray into the UK top ten in 1967.

That's from their infamous "lip-synched" concert. Fortunately there is a wealth of real live performance clips on YouTube. Some of the ones that have been posted in the last year or so have been recorded with digital equipment and are of excellent quality considering they're from amateur sources. Sorry, I have no talent for posting YouTube links.

Now I come to think about it, it did seem a bit too "perfect".....How did they get away with it.....

Still great to see them miming to it though.....

Sky Arts recently aired a doco about them, with about 45 minutes of concert footage from their Isle of Wight festival appearance. I recorded it, so if anyone wants a disk, PM me,

Of course, the Isle of Wright show is available commercially in addition to their Albert Hall and Red Rock Canyon concerts from a few years ago. IOW is particularly interesting because it features the classic original line-up. I picked up IOW from Mike Pinder's website since I'm a particular fan of his and he autographs everything he sells. I feel rather sorry there's a residue of ill-feelings between him and the rest of the guys. They were such a terrific team... pure magic.
