Â* There should be two Â*sign posts erected.... one at John O Groats with a sign saying Â*... Lands End Â*603 miles... and a similar post and sign at Lands end. These should be erected at the furthest point North Â*and South. Â*Some rich sponcer like... Richard Branson could pay for two very elaborate and stylish posts to be named the Branson Posts.. and people could take up the Â*.".. John O Groats to Lands End Â*Branson Challenge..."

These elaborateÂ* postsÂ* would then give a focus for any brave, foolhardy folk who want to set up a record. Â* Â*For eg... the fastest cycle ride between the two posts. Â*... the cyclist starting off from J O Groats ........ the stopwatch starting as soon as his hand lets go of the post. Â* Â* Then as soon as his hand touches the post at Lands End we would get his time.

I have no doubt that someone sooner or later would do it in under 3 days... quite a fete. Â*But not only cylcling... running.. walking... maybe even rollerskating... Â*they would all become legitimate records to be Â*broken. Â*I wonder what the running record would be ? Â* sooner or Â*later Â* someone would come in at under 6 days Â*which would be quite a fete !

No doubt some eccentric would do it running with a stick and hoop... or on a childrens scooter Â*!... However they do it, imagine the feeling of achievement and satisfaction as the lands end BransonÂ* post comes into view and you reach out and touch it Â* ! Â* wow ! Â*I may even get into training myself !

If you want to put one of your signposts at the most northerly point on mainland Britain, don't put it in John o' Groats. Even the locals don't claim it's the most northerly point.

That honour belongs to Dunnet Head

But there's already a signpost at John o' Groats saying "Lands End 874 miles"

and one at Land's End pointing to John o' Groats

Lots of people have already cycled, walked and even run between the two signs. Ian Botham did a sponsored walk from one to the other.

But apart from all of that it's a good idea

Im pretty sure the record for cycling the route has already been set at under two days. I remember Jimmy Saville doing the walk for charity many moons ago, It is indeed a very popular charity route, Im betting someone has even done the return journey!

Actually the most Southerly point isn't Lands End.....Its THE LIZARD, which I think I'm right in saying lies just below the 50 degree Longitude N line....

    I've been to both...

Unless it has been beaten in the last year, the cycling record is by Gethin Butler who, in September 2001, covered the distance in 1 day 20 hrs 4 min 19 sec.

    Â*You need two definite points to touch... Â*two Â*posts... Â*then you can set the record... Â*that cycling record is amazing... Â*1 Â*day Â*20 hours Â* 4 mins Â*obviously he never stopped to Â*sleep or Â*rest Â* !

    Â*that sign saying Â*lands end Â*804... Â*that must be kilometers Â*google Â*told me Â* 603 Â*miles

Quote Â* Wiki..... Â*Â*The straight-line distance from Land's End to John o' Groats is approximately 603 miles Â* Â*end quote

they cant both be wrong !Â*

go to wiki Â* Â* http://en.wikipedia....ohn_o%27_Groats Â* Â*I guess the Â*signs Â*pictured there will do... if Â*Branson isnt prepared to stump up the Â*cashÂ* for new ones..

wonder how John o Groats got all the fame, when really it should be Dunnet Head !

And does that "straight line" take into account the Earth's curvature?

    And the hills

My Dad (English) always used to say that Welsh miles were longer that English miles when we went to visit Mum's Welsh relatives. English miles just measure the distance on a flat map. They don't allow for all the extra distance as you go up and down over those Welsh hills

That would significantly alter the number of miles!

    you re Â*right, Â*those two Â*sign posts Â*would do it, Â* the stop watch set Â*and Â*stopped Â*from Â*touch Â*to Â*touch.

that Â*amazing Â*1 day and 20 Â*hour cycle ride should have been given a lot more publicity... I did nt hear a thing about it ! Â*Just like theres endless competition to shave a second off the Â*mile Â*race.... you d think there would be endless competition to do the " john o groats lands end run" and try to shave an hour or two off the time. Â*but then, each run would have to be officially monitored... it would be so easy to Â*cheat and Â* do a few miles in the support car Â*etc.

wonder which way Â*Beefy went... North to south or Â*south to north ?

I wonder if anyone has ever shuffled on their bum between those two points. Like a dog does when you forget to worm it.

    That would be some acheivement!

Tell the people who put up that marker at Dunnet Head

In fact Easter head is on Dunnet Head, so we're both right

The most northerly point of Dunnet Head is Easter Head

    Britain's southernmost house and view of Lizard point itself, I think the terrain and accessibility around Lizard Point and Dunnet head wasn't really suitable to be 'touristified' the way Lands End and John O'Groats is, they wouldn't be able cope with endless Coaches or have the room for facilities on a large scale, etc;

Here's a Wiki link to some info on The Lizard Peninsular.....

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lizard

Still fairly unspoilt and the coastal path is glorious on good summer days.....
