Christopher Lee will get the BAFTA fellowship award this coming Sunday. About time too!

BBC News - Christopher Lee to receive Bafta Fellowship

Christopher Lee to receive Bafta Fellowship
Hammer horror actor Sir Christopher Lee is to receive a Bafta Fellowship at the Academy's film awards on Sunday.
"It's a very unexpected but very great honour to find myself in such distinguished company to receive the fellowship," said Sir Christopher, 88.
The actor is best known for roles in films including Dracula, the Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, The Wicker Man and The Man with the Golden Gun.
Other recipients of the award include Charlie Chaplin and Alfred Hitchcock.
Steven Spielberg, Elizabeth Taylor, Sean Connery, John Barry and Stanley Kubrick are also among those who have been honoured with the fellowship.
Last year's recipient was Vanessa Redgrave.
Bafta chairman Tim Corrie said of Lee: "He has entertained me over many years and is a bastion of British film-making around the globe."
Sir Christopher has made himself known to a new and younger audience more recently with roles in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Star Wars prequels.
He has also worked with director Tim Burton on films including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland.
Sir Christopher is also starring in Martin Scorsese's latest movie, Hugo Cabret.
The movie, which is the Oscar-winning film-maker's first move into 3D, is due for release in December 2011.
The annual Bafta awards, hosted by Jonathan Ross, will be shown on BBC One at 2100 GMT this Sunday.

I'm delighted to hear this. I just hope nobody says the "D" word during the intro, or Sir Christopher will not be too pleased.

With Mr Ross hosting that's a bit optimistic.

I suppose so, but if J.R. does perhaps Sir C might put the bite on him and let us all out of our misery.

For what? Living a long time? I suppose people have received one for less.....

Whilst he has a great presence and is always recognisable, I cannot help but feel that respect for his variety and longevity outweighs any especial role he's ever played or any exceptionally fine performance. So far as I can tell, he's getting the award simply for being a bastion...... No harm in that but let's not get carried away.

Old Lee has given a number of Oscar worthy performances IMHO - The Wicker Man, Private Life of Sherlock Holmes and others. His performances have bolstered many poor films and enhanced others. Even when the script, director and special effects have worked against (as in alot of his films) him he still comes up smelling of roses - that takes real talent. A lot of thesps sink to the level of the film, not so Lee.

What's wrong with mentioning Count Dooku?

A thoroughly deserved award IMHO. Apart from his longevity he helped make Hammer one of the most successful UK companies and has entertained millions of people for over 50 years .... not too shabby methinks.

It was a very nice occasion. There seemed to be genuine warmth in his reception (a teary-eyed Julianne Moore and an enthusiastically waving Stephen Fry) and I think he was genuinely moved by it all.

I was glad to see a tiny bit of his Rochefort in the tribute clips and also his excellent turns in Jinnah and Triage.

I've always been a big fan of Sir Christopher Lee, and I am very happy for him receiving his award. But I was a bit shocked by appearance last night.

I know he's nearly 90 but he seems to have aged considerably in the last two years. He looks very frail.

I was shocked too but have just read that he had an accident and damaged his vertebra a while ago, so no wonder he is struggling and needs a stick now. It must be hard to be in that condition at any age never mind 88, so he is probably doing very well considering.

last night shows that he is still active and still up for public appearences. Good on him

He's made at least three films since his accident and he's due to make The Hobbit this year, so he seems to be able to continue working at a (for him) slightly reduced pace.

In the Telegraph yesterday he said he wanted to 'die with his boots on' still working to the end.

1965 - He's not complaining about the screen status he has earned - except when critics under-rate the talent and effort required to maintain it.
