I'm surprised there's been no comment about the new cop series, Vera, which aired last night.

I thought it was quite good. Obviously set in the North East somewhere but miles from a city and even the town looke small. I wonder where it was.

Just posted my review in the 'Watched Last Night Thread'. I thought it was dull predictable stuff. Despite the best efforts of the great Brenda Blethyn, it was pretty yawn inducing.

Must say I was underwhelmed a pretty preposterous story and some dodgy performances too, nice to see a series shot away from London though and maybe it will improve.

Very unimpressed. A silly story coupled with some mediocre characters. Stuck it out until the end, but won't be watching again.

I'm a Brenda Blethyn fan - but I hope that, even she, will admit that this wasn't her finest hour. I suspect few people who watched last night will be tuning in again, I certainly won't.

I hope the new BBC1 controller was watching it......

I tried and tried to get into this, but gave up after 45 minutes. Brenda Blethyn was the main reason I wanted to see this, but I feel she was underutilised?

I must admit I was disappointed by this, too. I thought the story and acting were unconvincing and the set up of a shambolic but effective detective (no rhyme intended :) ) has already been done to death.
Still, I usually like to give a new show a couple of episodes before deciding whether to keep watching, so I'll give it another go and see if it improves.

It was nice to see Murray Head again though.

I thought it was good too - will certainly watch again. Vera is an idiosyncratic character and I think she'll grow on me.

It was shot partly in Newcastle Upon Tyne - down by the Quayside and around the Uni. And out on the coast in various places - I think I recognised Blyth. Although there was one very odd shot of the Angel of the North looming over some houses - so that would be more like Team Valley.

The episode shown tonight was more like an episode of Midsomer Murders with bodies all over the place in the most unlikely situations. I still like Brenda's performances in it, but the writing certainly isn't great

Sorry, apart from Blethyn's performance this is a non-starter for me. The cliched plotting and dull direction sent me to sleep.

Struggled to get through the first episode, thought it was dreadful.

Normally I am a big fan of a lot of English police series, but this was a complete Turkey.

    Dull, predictable, derivative.

ACTRESS Brenda Blethyn has revealed how adopting a Geordie accent for her latest major TV role has been “scary”.

She is starring as DCI Vera Stanhope in ITV’s new blockbuster murder mystery Vera.

Brenda, who was born in Kent, said: “It is notoriously difficult to do a North Eastern accent and that was the scary thing for me.

It has been filmed over the last two years across the North East at locations such as Newcastle’s Quayside, North Shields and Dunstanburgh Castle.

After the first episode, I couldn't bring myself to watch it again last Sunday.
I think I would have preferred a series with Brenda Blethyn being a London copper who had been promoted 'oop north' - I don't feel that she has 'got to grips' with the Geordie accent at all.

I love Brenda and I really wanted to like this, but I just can't.

The Geordie accent is the least of her problems. The biggest problem is the script, or the underlying story.
They tried to make it interesting by cramming about 20 different twists in the tail of the tale. But it needs more then that, much more than that.

Has anyone here read the books that this character is based on?

One of the girls I work with has read a couple of the books and is very disappointed with the TV series.
