Huge sale of Criterion DVDs at Amazon.com. 50% or more off. My wallet is almost afraid to look at the list of 42 DVDs.

Good question, Roger. I don't know if they are multi-region or not. From discussions in here, I have the impression that UK players can play anything but it's our American machines that give problems for anything out of the region. I've recently discovered that the VLC in my new MAC laptop won't play all region 2 UK discs the way my old Dell did.

Do you have any problem playing region 1?

    Best,

    Barbara

    Hi, Flynn,

I know what you mean about tenners. For me, the Criterion DVDs are so tempting because of the extras, e.g. interviews, etc. And this sale has some Blu-Ray discs that are almost the same price as the regular DVD like the Blu-Ray of The Red Shoes. My next big temptation is to get a multi-region Blu-Ray player. I know...I'm a goner!

    Take care,

    Barbara

Hi Barbara, I have never bought any region 1 disks, I have just assumed that they probably won't play in the players that I have. There are a few DVDs that I want that are only available in region 1 so I should give it a try.

Splash out and try one to see. That's the only way to find out.

Google the make and model of your DVD player along with the phrase "region free". Just about every DVD player sold in the UK in the last decade or so can play region 1 DVDs. Most need a code to be entered via the remote. Either as a one-off code to make it region free or every time you play a DVD from a different region.

If all else fails you can play it in the DVD player in your PC or laptop. Some media players, particularly the Micro$oft one, try to limit you on the number of times you can change regions. But the better players, like the VLC Media Player doesn't believe in any of that nonsense.

Region controls are of dubious legality anyway. They are a restriction on free trade and all the countries that produce them have signed up to various free trade agreements

Region controls on recent films and series I can sort of understand, but on archive TV and old films? I don't get it. I have lots of US DVDs in my collection - many titles I would never be able to view otherwise, particularly BBC titles. I believe this silly coding has carried over to Blu Ray as well, which is a shame.
