I suppose the Beeb does because there's already a "buzz" about the new release so they hope they'll pick up extra viewers by showing previous instalments.
Has this always been the case or is it just more noticeable in recent years with the emphasis on sequels? I've noticed that when a new Indy, Pirates of the Caribbean or Cars film is due for release, suddenly the Beeb screen the old films, ITV seem bound to plug Harry Potter and CH4 will air Iron Man and Transformers to coincide with follow-ups. I can understand the commercial stations being a marketing tool but should the BBC?

Isn't it more a case of trying to get higher viewing figures, as they're tapping into an audience that will want to see the precursors?

It's no different really from showing Miracle on 34th Street or It's a Wonderful Life at Christmas. Or, showing Easy Money when the Lottery started as C4 did. Bless.
LOL I have been thinking about this for a good while too - esp. when Auntie gives over the Radio Times covers in a similar fashion... Simply upping sales by being topical, or just that little bit too heavy-handed? Personally i think it's the latter.
