    Hi.

I`ve been watching this during the week. I`m not keen on Arthur Lowe`s Irish accent, but I do enjoy the programme.

Anyone else remember it? Anyone remember the Doomsday chair?

    Ha ha yes, she`s brilliant!

Is that a very young John Laurie in your avatar?..Maybe not, probably a bit young to be in colour?

It is Mr Laurie [aged 46], all my avatars feature him [an idea cribbed unashamedly from Capt W], taken from his role in The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp

He was born in Dumfries [on the Maxwellton side of the river] same as I. Both proud Doonhamers

"Bless Me, Father" is really a bit of a forgotten gem - (being "gentle" humour at a time when "broad" comedy was perhaps more popular) maybe it just wasn't quite "right", though it ran to three series and some of the stories on which they were based were popular enough to appear in condensed form in the Reader's Digest at about the same time (with the original book versions turning up often enough in second-hand bookshops to make me think they must have had a following), but the performances are all pretty good, the plots are nicely farcical without being ridiculous, and I think it should be due for a reappraisal.

I wonder if they could bring this series back? Even though Arthur seems to be struggling with the accent, there was still nobody like him, so not sure who else would play the part. Except perhaps Richard Wilson?

Arthur Lowe may seem to be struggling with the accent, but I seem to recall, somewhere in one of the books, that Father Duddleswell, for all his Oirishness, is actually from Birmingham (though this isn't mentioned in the TV series).
I don't see the point of bringing the series back though, it just needs a repeat, after all, the series is in colour and the print seems to be in pretty good condition (and we'd probably have had one if it had been a BBC rather than ITV production).
Richard Wilson in the role would be about as good casting as Martin Clunes as Reggie Perrin

It's a series I'm aware of but have never seen - one to catch up with at some point. I can't imagine Arthur Lowe playing Irish though!

I loved the show. I don't mind the accent at all - most of the time it seems okay (maybe my Irish relations have dodgy accents!). Apparently Arthur was really in the grip of narcolepsy by this time, so there were some dodgy moments in rehearsals, but it sounds like the cast enjoyed working on the show. I'd love to get a box set but the last time I checked it was a bit pricey.

Complete series is about a tenner on Amazon at the moment. Worth it, I'd say.
