DVD-R : Manufactured On Demand?

Has anyone bought any of these DVD-R : Manufactured On Demand DVDs?

In North America it seems to be the only way to get some of the old classic
British movies. I gather there is not enough demand for a regular release.

I took a chance and ordered "Went The Day Well" (1942).

Just wondering if I am going to be fine or dissapointed.

Comments? Opinions?

I have bought a few of these, James, mainly the Warner Bros. Archive editions, and have had no problems with them so far.

Likewise, I have a few of these (Savage Messiah, Between the Lines, The Reckoning, No Blade of Grass, Agatha ) and I have been very impressed. They have definitely used high quality print sources and although they might lack the painstaking restoration work accorded a major classic, they are actually a lot better than many 'off the shelf' DVDs I have. Cover art is no less good either.

They are all region free as well. But bear in mind they have no extras.

There area few more (Sim ones like Laughter in Paradise, and The Green Man) that I would like to get.

Not worried about extras. As long as it plays and the picture is acceptable.

I have bought quite a few via Amazon ..... they are very good quality, with regard to both the content and packaging.

Like the others I have bought many of the Warner Archive Collection...All terrific quality...the latest being 'Rhapsody In Blue'...incredible quality and complete with play-in music! Film Man.

JamesDFarrow, cancel that bootleg you have just bought. Went the Day Well was released by Anchor Bay in 2006 but is out of print and was not a DVDr. I believe that only Lions Gate have access to Ealing Studios films in the US. They have not released Went the Day Well? (1942). the people selling the bootleg called "Holywood's Attic" have even lied about the 'release year'. They have even nicked the new poster design from the BFI or Studio Canal.

Order a copy from the UK instead (remastered in the last year) and buy a multi-region player or play it on a PC through something like the VLC Player. Better still, buy the superb Blu-ray. It might be region locked though.

DVDs on demand from the big studios will be good quality but do not expect much from bootleggers. The Amazon Instant Video is also unlicensed.

I bought some from Columbia and Warner's in the US and had no problems at all. The quality of the prints were excellent.

Box art is fine. One concern is that it's has "Nostalgia Family Video" on the back.

Don't like the sound of that, Don't know if anyone here remembers the old
VHS days. You learned by experience to avoid the "Happy Times" or "Good
Times" brands as they were usually cheap prints. Hope this "Nostalgia" is
not like them.

Will check it out tonight maybe and let everyone know.

"Nostalgia Family Video" is (or used to be) a company in the States that sold old films on video. Then, when DVDs started, they sold DVDs as well. Some people used to complain about the quality of what they sold but I bought quite a few from them and never had any complaints. They always sold titles in "plain covers", a standard cover indicating that it was a video or DVD from Nostalgia Family Video.

But their web site doesn't seem to be currently available

Watched it. Pretty good actually.

Picure looked good/clear. Like your second photo. Audio - voices and sound effects fine - the only quibble was the background music. Slight stutter from time to time.

All in all, fine by me. Especially for films not avavilable from anywhere else.

Will probably buy a couple more.

A few years ago Universal Music licensed some of it's back catalogue as cd-r on demand and the quality was as good as regular cd,except for very basic booklet.The operation seems to have wound down as I haven't seen any lately.If the DVD-r on demand is properly licensed and not bootlegged, it may be the only way to get some titles.Personally I'm still hoping someone will do Legion's Last Patrol and Charge Of The Black Lancers.Another forum member tipped me off about a source in the USA for the latter but they wanted to charge £18 postage.

'Nostalgia' have been selling DVDs via ebay and amazon.com for some time now under a different name. They come with artwork etc and the quality of the ones I have bought has been very good.

Rhapsody in Blue-looks as though it was filmed yesterday.First class quality DVD.
..Oh!and the movie is good as well.
B/Ws always seem to stand out best.
Bought 'Bitter Sweet' not a 100%,soft focus colour,best viewed on a 19"screen.Yet when shown on TV here many years ago,nice and sharp,I've heard others complain.
All a chance really.

Watched "Laughter In Paradise". Great stuff. Alastair was great. Print was pretty good.

Haven't watched "The Green Man" yet. Hopefully will get a chance this coming weekend.

I think I will get the Hornleigh ones next.
