If you are using Windows 7 the Snipping tool is probably the first and easiest solution....other than that you can download VLC Media player....

DVD Shrink (freeware) for DVDs (you may need additional software to rip the DVD first - DVD Decrypter (freeware) or, preferably but not free, AnyDVD from Slysoft.

Avidemux (freeware) for video file clips.

Not free but excellent software - WinX DVD Ripper can copy the whole disc or you can set the time parameters within the film that you want to capture. Another one, Handbrake, is freeware but very slow.

OOps, forgot this one - instead of paid version AnyDVD, use freeware DVDFAb passkey for ripping encrypted.

This is free today and only for the next few hours. Make sure you follow the instructions carefully and get the activation code otherwise you'll be restricted to copying only the first five minutes of each disc. I can thoroughly recommend it and once set up, is really easy to do:

Virtualdub. You do not need to rip the DVD. Just open it up in Virtualdub and find a section you want and then make an avi from that.
