Is there a remedy for jerky downloads?

Downloaded fine here, not great quality but smooth enough.

Arthur - the files are always flv. I am using the basic, free YTD (You Tube video downloader & converter) to download them and then converting them to DVD using convertXtodvd and playing them in a Sony DVD recorder. would you suggest I look for another converter?

AVStoDVD and/or DVD Flick - both freeware. Sometimes it's handy to do a couple of conversions to check against each other.

Also check whether the converted files are "jerky" before burning the DVD (i.e still stored on the computer), and after burning (on the DVD, played on the computer).

I assume that you check that the .flv file is not "jerky" in the first place

In all cases, use a superior player like Daum PotPleyer (freeware) to try it.

Hi Steve - i really don't d/l from youtube so i don't want to purchase s/w. But i am intrigued to know why these differences are occurring. Most of all why the fps differs. I am assuming that both you and richard in wales are getting 30 fps as keif has reported? If you right click on the video online and choose 'show video info' what fps figure do you get? When you've downloaded, what fps is the video file? I've done it again using the firefox 'videohelper' addon this time. That produces an mp4, but again at 15fps, and i can't see how the online video is anything other than 15fps.

I suppose what constitutes 'smooth' is always going to be somewhat subjective. But i've never seen 15fps video that is not jerky to my perception.

It does seem to depend on how they are uploaded. I have some that I've downloaded from YouTube (via their web site or using the licensed application) which are 25 frames/sec and others that are 30 frames/sec

The Journey to the Unknown video mentioned above has a frame rate of 14 frames/sec but plays quite smoothly on my system

Anyway, having left Steve World and back on the planet earth I've downloaded Ep6 and its OK, not great quality though to start with. I'll convert it with DVD Flick later.

You got it. I prefer real, grown up operating systems that do proper multi-tasking not kiddie systems like Micro$oft make. Yes, Windoze 7 is quite good, they are getting better. A few more decades and they'll be up to the standard of what a first year computer science undergraduate could write with one hand tied behind his back

Right, converted one episode to DVD and it plays OK but as said the quality is pretty poor to start with so won't look great on a full size TV. That said, thanks for the memory jog as its a good series and worth watching again regardless of the quality.

The imperfections won't be just limited to the viewing quality.

Oh fer goodness sake, it's probably one of the most common terms of derision used on multiple forums throughout the internet, frequently, by many users ... myself included.

IIRC, there is/was even a website Windoze, dedicated to providing "back door" updates to the Windows operating system.

The word has a long history, and Microsoft has only itself to blame for the origins of the word - which was totally justified at the time, and has a long way to go before it can be lived down.

It's an operating system of convenience, that has bullied it's way into a disproportionate market share, and only keeps that because of computer user apathy, reticence and ignorance.

That may be true, although even if it's only been converted once, the c.360kps bitrate of this upload will mean that you won't get a decent picture. But I'm convinced that the 'jerkiness' problem that prompted the thread is overwhelmingly due to the 14-15fps of the clip and the different reports here are due to individual differences in perception and opinion of what constitutes 'smooth' movement. And i don't think there's a solution. Many apps will 'convert' 15fps to 30 fps by simply doubling each frame, but it doesn't affect the smoothness. If there are any apps that will construct and insert frames that represent where an object(s) should be in-between frames, as it were, i imagine they would be rather specialist and expensive.
