The BBC are making a new version of Ethel Lina White's novel,The Wheel Spins,which became a celebrated film directed by Alfred Hitchcock The Lady Vanishes.It will star Tuppence Middleton,Jesper Christensen,Stephanie Cole, and Gemma Jones. It will be filmed in Budapest and will be televised over Christmas.

Must be something to do with rights. I've never read it but didn't Launder & Gilliatt throw away much of the book because it wasn't much good?

I assume the BBC actually own the rights to the characters because of the Keith Waterhouse series. Or maybe his widow does . There's a radio version that turns up on Radio 4 Extra occasionally. The main difference, apart from no C and C is that Miss Froy is a real governess who just happens to have found out a secret about the Bandrikan royal family. The book ends when Iris and the hero find her alive after all - no shoot-out and there isn't much suggestion of romance

If The Thirty-Nine Steps adaptation is anything to go by I won't be getting too excited. They put Roger De Caucey in that one. Who'll have a cameo in this one - Paul Daniels ?

I liked that one, even if Alex Jennings was shamefully underused If there's ever been a bad drama set on a train, I've yet to see it

Glad to hear it! The Suchet version of MOTOE is fine-it's just that most people (who haven't read the novel)presume it's Christies masterpiece and are disappointed when in reality the fame of the book and the romance of the Orient Express is the draw rather than the plot which is ok but far from Christies best IMO

BBC to revamp Hitchcock thriller The Lady Vanishes

Keeley Hawes is to star in a new BBC adaptation of Hitchcock thriller The Lady Vanishes, which will air this Christmas.

The 90-minute psychological thriller for BBC One will start filming on location in Budapest later this month.

It tells the story of wealthy young 1930s socialite Iris Carr, who finds a woman has disappeared from her train while travelling across Europe.

The cast also includes Stephanie Cole and Julian Rhind-Tutt.

Writer Fiona Seres has adapted the script from Ethel Lina White's novel The Wheel Spins, which also inspired Hitchcock's 1939 film The Lady Vanishes.

Relative newcomer Tuppence Middleton plays socialite Carr, who is comforted by Miss Froy after fainting on a train platform, before waking up to discover her good Samaritan has vanished.

"Fiona's adaptation of The Wheel Spins deftly weaves together the intriguing stories of a psychologically complex group of characters... played out against the tense backdrop of the Balkans in the 1930s," said BBC Drama's Kate Harwood.

Several British TV stars will appear in the drama, including Spooks' Gemma Jones, Selina Cadell from Doc Martin in the role of the vanishing Miss Froy and Silk star Tom Hughes as fellow traveller Max.

Hawes, who previously starred in BBC dramas Ashes to Ashes and Spooks, will play Mrs Todhunter, with The Hour star Rhind-Tutt as Mr Todhunter.

I assume Gemma Jones and Stephanie Cole are the dull spinsters from the book who were replaced by rather more interesting bachelors in the film.

Hope not. But who would play C & C in a new version. Lowe and Carmichael stood in well IMHO in the otherwise weak remake and Aldridge and Bailey were a good team as well. But who could play them now without parody and self-indulgent 'knowing' acting ?

Sadly, I don't think we'll be seeing C & C Which is a shame because Alex jennings and Simon Russell Beale would have been perfect . Agree about Messrs Aldridge and Bailey who were splendid.
