A version was shown the German RTL channel with EXTRA scenes.

1.Norman Bates monitors Marion through the hole a bit longer. She takes off her bra, followed by another shot of Normans face in a close up. After that, we see Marion again, taking the bra off completely.

2.After Norman Bates has carried Marions body out of the bathroom, the shot of him looking at his bloody hands is a bit longer.

    3.
    Uncut Version:
    • Normans bloody hands
    • Norman in a close up. He walks towards the bathroom. (Alternative footage)
    • Normans bloody hands in a close up
    • Cut to the bathroom: Again we see Normans hands in a close up. he walks to the faucet and washes his hands.

    4.R-Rated Version:

For the german edit, the letter that the man is writing at his desk has been replaced by a german translation. This german version is also on screen a bit longer. The following shot of the man at the desk is, at the beginning of the shot, 8 frames longer as well.

After Arbogast has fallen down the stairs an Norman, dressed as his mother, stabs him in the the Off, the uncut version contains two more stabs before the scene blends away.

Note: Right here we also have a change of film-reels. We don't know whether the scene is shorter due to the reel change or due to censorship. It is possible that both is the case.

My question is this.......On the old CIC Videotape it states "See it the way it was Originally made!Uncut!Every scene intact!"

If that was the case how come those scenes are not in the CIC tape,DVD or any other version other than the German RTL broadcast ?

Unless this publicity blurb on the tape was used because of commercial TV allowing ad breaks ?

All the photos of the scenes above are shown here in this link.

    and here also.

I have an A&E dvd set of the Danger Man that has the byline:

The Landmark First Season of Secret Agent - never before seen in the US

Erm......... read your own newspapers guys.....

The differences in the German version of Psycho could be linked with some dubbing issues, where the dialogue sounds necessitated slight variations in scene length?

Just a theory, but I shouldn't take moor recent marketing claims too seriously...

    a) It's advertising material. You should always be wary of what is said in ads
    b) The phrase "originally made" is ambiguous. It doesn't mean every foot of film shot, there is bound to be more film shot than appears in any version. That's the case with almost every film. The editors select which footage to include.
It is more likely that it means "the version that was originally screened in cinemas" - but which version? In which country?

The photos in the German version show more than I ever saw at the cinema or TV.

True Steve but over the years why has this not been released ?

So many versions have been released of other films (ie Extended Cuts etc etc ) but not this one.

Given this is a classic movie which a lot of people would like to own in this version.

More doesn't always mean better. Extraneous footage is usually cut for a reason.
What does this additional footage add to the film? What does it take away?

And the letter in Deutsch is obviously just an extraneous piece. I wonder whose hands they were and who filmed them?

The bra-removal scene does illustrate the differing attitudes to nudity in the Anglo-American culture and the European kultur. It's interesting in that sense, but hardly of relevance to any vision of the movie from director or editors.

A nonetheless fascinating piece of research however Mr. Isle......

There's always something new to mull over....

The cuts in the current MGM DVD version of DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE (1941) are even more impressive. I have the German version, recorded from TV, and it's almost like another movie, in places. This link mentions all the cuts, with screen caps of the missing scenes or shots:

This kind of alternate shots (for letters, newspapers, etc.) was a quite common practice in almost every country. I have seen the 1931 FRANKENSTEIN with the Dr. Waldman's diary (during the "autopsy" sequence) in Italian.
The credits were also commonly remade, I have seen for instance the Hammer gothics with their original credits, and French credits as well. Sometimes, even the color of letters was different, for instance in red in the British credits, in white in the French print, and so on.

Apart from title changes, UK and US prints of Hammer films do have several differences, for example the billing for The Gorgon, where it's Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee on the UK print and the other way round on the US print.

Weird. I've definitely seen the side shot of Janet Leigh's partly exposed breast, but it's not in my DVD. I could only have seen it in a UK TV screening or on my old VHS.
