Hi all! Who's your favourite British comedy actor or actress? I don't mean a comedian/dienne who's appeared in films, but a genuinely funny actor. It might be interesting to see where the line's drawn between the two, i.e. the great Will Hay, comedy actor or comedian? I would most certainly say comedy actor, any way see what you think.....Be happy!.....Decks. :)

Alastair Sim without a doubt. A wonderful comedy actor. The Green Man is a particular favourite.

You are right about Corbett and Bramble, Ollie.

To add to your list from another angle...

    My ambient humour list:

Peter Ustinov - The great humourist.

Wilfred Hyde-White - My dad took me to see him on stage in the West End when I was young (Rolls hyphen Royce). He is classic subtle humour.

George Sanders - favourite line - "all right you will have your cookies" (Foreign Correspondent)

Maggie Smith - The actress with zenith talent

Glynis Johns - Sweet and funny

Diana Rigg - Shakespearean wit and Emma Peeler

Two veteran actors who have ambient humour are John Mills and Michael Caine.

Two contemporary men who have great ambient comic potential are Ewan McGregor and Pete Postlethwaite.

Two contemporary women who have great ambient comic potential are Kate Winslet and Tara Fitzgerald.

    The contagious clowns:

    Dudley Moore

    John Cleese

And, don't forget Wallace & Gromit. wink

Both James Robertson Justice and Alastair Sim are firm favourites with me.

I'd add to the list of comic actors:

    Leslie Phillips

    Sid James

    Cecil Parker

    Ian Carmichael

    Lionel Jefferies

I agree with those aforementioned, for instance John Cleese, now personally I think "The Life Of Brian" is a positively hilarious film, but are the Python team comic actors or comedians? They sort of cross the line I feel, starting out as college wags, moving onto T.V.,writing and performing sketches then into film as well as doing live stand-up. I suppose in the end it doesn't really matter as long as they're funny! So that said I'd like to add Michael Palin. :)

Talking about dry, anyone remember(I think it was )Robin Bailey in the Cockburns adverts? I thought he was very dry and funny when he replied to the Russian captain's question "then I come from Moscock?" ...." yes I think you probably do"........one shouldn't say cock.... :) regards, Decks.

What about the great Sir Alec in the Ealing comedies. Or come to that, Stanley Holloway, or that other Stanley, Laurel? Or the entire cast of the "Somewhere In" films? Then of course the great C.Chaplin. Peter Sellars has to be the greatest talent this country has ever produced, still missed to this day...

I agree with your sentiment regarding Peter Sellars Bob.M, and I personaly won't get involved in all the bad press and writings released after his death. I'd just like to remember how funny he was as a true comic actor. :) Regards, Decks.
