Hi all! I just wondered if anyone remembers "Hazell" a series of escapades of a loveable rogue played by Nicholas Ball in the seventies? I also wondered if anyone has a recent pic of him? Regards, Decks.

Created by football chieftain Terry Venables! The last time I saw Nicholas Ball (once married to Pamela Stehpenson), was on an advert in which he played the father of a family who appeared on a quiz show and he forgot to tape it.

Anyway, back to Hazell:James Hazell was a cop who had to take early retirement due to injury, turned to drink, lost his marriage, but after drying up,became a private eye. He was aided by his cousin Tel (Desmond McNamara) and a former partner "Choc" Minty (Roddy McMillan) and enjoyed the glamorous side of being a PI (I remember him bedding the wife of a client {an actor who I can see his face, but I can't remember his full name George...something}). A la Phillip Marlowe,James Hazell narrated the stories. It was based on the books by El Tel (now the manager of a fictional Sun cartoon strip football team),who co-helped the transition to the small screen with Gordon Williams. Maggie Bell had two unsuccessful flirts with the UK charts in 1978 with Hazell, the theme song, reaching only 37 and 74 in 1978.

I hope that is of some service to you Decks

Hazel was a very enjoyable series and he looked really cool in his Triumph Stag with his blow dried hair. I bought a beige bomber jacket just like his, to go with my Oxford bags, very thin belt, and stack heeled boots! It didn't improve my girl pulling power though!

What was Hazel's daily rate can anyone remember? I've a feeling it was £75 a day plus expenses!

I saw Nicholas Ball on TV a few years later in The Young Ones I think, as a uni lecturer!

6 guineas wouldn't keep Hazell in blow dries at the hairdressers, even back then!

Yes, his bouffant was the only reason worth watching Hazell.

Your right Samkydd, it was a great voice for a great series when Mark McManus was in it.

As for Hazell am sure that wonderful actor Roland Culver was cast as his GP who took Hazell to the pub to discuss his drink problem.

Wasn't the front end of a mini used as a drinks cabinet in his house?

    regards

Nicholas Ball was on the BBC series New Tricks last night, playing the part of an ageing ex-DI. He still has the Hazell haircut, but naturally he's looking older. I didn't realise how tall he was until I saw a shot of him and James Bolam and Alun Armstrong walking together and he towered above them.

I didn't like this series when it first came out, but then having seen so much dire TV since and having watched a few episodes recently via DVD it's not bad at all, no "Public Eye" of course but watchable enough. The box set of series one can be had for £15 or less now.

I just read on another post that 'Vincent' has been cancelled. How about bringing back 'Hazell'? Who would you cast? Three names come to mind ....

    Craig Fairbrass

    Leslie Grantham

    and ....

Nicholas Ball (Williams and Venable always thought he was too young at the time, well now he's older and still looking good)

Well Vincent was supposed to be a sort of latter day 'Azell, but unfortunately it wasn't very good. I would definitely watch repeats of 'Azell though! Nothing against old Barney Rubble, but Vincent was a bit obvious in its storylines, it lacked credibility, had a supporting crew of soapsters who weren't very interesting and the whole thing seemed very tired!

The promising sounding Jericho was just the same and another lesson in how not to write drama. Research and accuracy are all important and it doesn't matter what star fills the show's main character, crap stories are still crap stories! These shows appear to be the work of some cut n' paste artist who has nicked bits and pieces from other shows' stories, cobbled it together and it's been okayed by someone called Jaquiiiii or Nikkiiii who hasn't had to watch TV since catching the measles at Roedean, but whose Daddy is very high up in the TV industry and once received a Christmas card from Lew Grade!I kydd you not!

When ITV were hyping "JERICHO" It looked well good and I was keen to see it. After the first couple of episodes I thought what a wasted chance of a good idea how on earth could anyone ruin a good format for a well produced series that could have run and run. Then I watched the Making of programme on ITV2. There it was for all to see Robert Lindsays ego.
