Many television drama shows now have the irritating habit of playing unecessary background noises/music for effect.

Shows such as 'Blood In The Wire', 'Waking The Dead' ect.. seem to love playing loud bangs, screetches, loud music and other weird noises that sometimes even obliterate's the programs dialogue.

It's difficult enough for any viewer to sit through such background noises but i've been told by people with hearing aid's that these noises can make it near impossible for them to follow the dialogue.

So why do so many productions feel the need to "raise the tension" by inserting so many loud and weird noises?

For me a lot of the noise doesn't make the program any more exciting - most of it actually makes me cringe.
