Hearty Congratulations to one of Britain's greatest and much loved actors David Jason on news of his well deserved knighthood in the Queen's Birthday Honours list

From "Open All Hours" to "Darling Bud's Of May" and from "Only Fool's and Horses" to "A Touch of Frost" David has been a great servant to the British acting profession.

Seems a really nice guy in real life too !

I wholeheartedly agree. My favourite David Jason role is Jack Frost, one of the best TV detective characters ever!

Perhaps it's time now for a full retrospective and he might reconsider, and give permissions for THE SECRET LIFE OF EDGAR BRIGGS and A SHARP INTAKE OF BREATH to be released, so we can see if they are as we remember them ?

Good luck to him. But why him and not say anyone else?. I don't know about you others out there but when I first read any honours list I always get an automatic gut reaction that says yes that feels right or no can't see it. I got a yes for Terry Wogan but a no for dear old David. Anybody feel the same?.

If you don't think David Jason deserves it, just look at the body of his work. Not just Del Boy in Only Fools and Horses . "Blanco" in Porridge, Open All Hours, "Nogood Boyo" in Under Milk Wood, Danger Mouse, Porterhouse Blue, The Darling Buds of May, A Touch of Frost and many others.

What's Terry Wogan done? A bit on the radio and a few Eurovisions.

It's about time that casting agents start putting David Jason into movies as they should have done with John Thaw. What a wasted opportunity, he could have been up there with Michael Caine and that Irish actor who appeared in 'The Cassandra Crossing' and for some reason (despite being a household name) I cannot remember his name as I type this. Instead he ended up being King of the ITV 9pm hour-long dramas before the news. That is not to say television drama is inferior to cinema. I believe that John Thaw had the right persona for the cinema screen as does David Jason.

Incidentally Steve, you forgot to mention 'Do Not Adjust Your Set'.

To be fair about Terry Wogan,he has been in broadcasting on national radio since 1967 - 38 years ago - and has presented numerous tv programmes, voiced over many commercials, and has ultimately become the most popular DJ in Britain, extending perhaps to the rest of the world through satelite etc. Terry Wogan,IMHO,has a brilliant early morning radio show, which is never patronising to its listeners and succeeds in making every listener a member of his "zoo". He plays music which stretches and suits every tastes, and also he has promoted new bands or talent in parallel with reminding us on the unsung talent of yesteryear.

He has also presented BBC Children In Need since the early 1980's,a charity I've always trusted that every penny sent,is every penny spent on the cause intent, and each year gets better in money raised and also good entertainment provided thus.

I am a big fan of (Sir) Terry Wogan, indeed I am a big fan of Radio 2,so leave him alone and let him relish in his new found glory,of which he richly deserves, and here is in hope for the future of Sir Jonathan Ross (an entertaining broadcaster ),Sir Johnny Walker ,Sir Steve Wright ,Stuart Maconie MBE ,Lord Brian Matthew of Abbey Road ,King Ken the Bruce and First Lady Sally Traffic .

Oh yes, I'd forgotten about Children in Need. All right, I'll let him off.

I've never heard his radio show though (nor that of Johnathan Ross). All the radios in my house only work on Radio 4.

You might have heard me on Radio 4 a few years ago on Screen Test, introduced by Brian Dibley. I won the Newcastle heat, then going to the semi-finals in Manchester. I came second. My specialist subjects were the James Bond films and Steven Spielberg films.

I went for that and the researcher didn't want to know because I didn't watch the trendy films of the time...

No disrespect Marky, those are quality subjects, but not the 'highbrow' (?) subjects she gave the impression they were looking for.

Good on you, BTW - a decent showing !

That was a good quiz show with quite high standards so well done.

The one that really impresses me though is the music quiz Counterpoint. The range of musical styles the contestants know about is very impressive.

I'd say they do their best work on the Radio. Maybe the problem you had was no so much that they have been too well rewarded but that some very deserving folks haven't? Will we ever get Sir Ronald Neame (currently CBE)? Or how about Britain's biggest ever oscar winner and top cinema composer Sir John Barry (currently OBE)? Dame Deborah Kerr (still a CBE)?

I suspect Ross's honour has rather more to do with the amount of money and jobs he's generated for the television industry over the last eighteen years, not only for the shows he's fronted but also the rather greater number that were produced for his Channel X production company (including virtually everything involving Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer).

Much like Hammer's legendary Queen's Award for Industry, such honours usually have far more to do with commerce than art.

I have been on about John Barry getting a knighthood for a while, and I can't understand why the other two have not been daubed.

I thought it might be worth linking to this piece, which helpfully lists numerous famous people who've refused honours over the years.

Names relevant to British film and TV include:

    Alan Bennett

    Honor Blackman

    David Bowie

    Kenneth Branagh

    John Cleese

    Dawn French

    Trevor Howard

Helen Mirren (refused CBE from Tories, accepted Damehood from Labour)

Vanessa Redgrave (accepted CBE, refused Damehood)

    Jennifer Saunders

Alastair Sim (accepted CBE, refused knighthood)

As for Deborah Kerr, the fact that she spent so much of her career in America may well have counted against her - Alfred Hitchcock and P.G.Wodehouse weren't knighted until the year of their deaths (though admittedly Wodehouse's knighthood was delayed for other reasons). As I suggested above, honours are usually linked to generation of some kind of income for British institutions as opposed to fame per se.
