Does anyone have any information on the true story that this classic film is based on? My late father served with the 8th army during the war and this was his favourite film. I would love to know how much is true and how much is script writers licence.

I don't think it is based on a true story. Who has claimed it was? It's based on a novel by Christopher Landon who then wrote the screenplay

Its a great commercial for Carlsberg, a point not lost on the beer manufacturer who ran a tv ad campaign in the eighties using the scene at the end where Mills downs a cold glass of beer, Im sure you all remember. Interestingly , Sylvia Sims being interviewed about the film candidly commented that she got paid £30,000 for the use of the scene in the ad, more than she got paid for appearing in the film itself!

Perhaps the part about it being true wasn't true!!!

It's called "artistic license" - either that or "fibbing"



Sylvia Simms wasn't in it. But Sylvia Syms certainly did look gorgeous

I stand korecktid (there is a Sylvia Simms I believe). And I must admit that I did enjoy the film even more thinking that it was based on truth. I hope that it was.

Yes, there is an actress called Sylivia Simms. That's why I made the distinction.



It might have been based on a real incident. Some very strange events did happen. Maybe the novel was written after Landon heard about it from someone. I don't want to spoil any illusions

Quite a few reviews do say it's based on a true story. But none give any details about the event it was based on.

As I recollect, in the book, it is MSM Tom Pugh, not Captain Anson, who wins the love of Sister Diana Murdoch.
