    W. SOMERSET MAUGHAM.......movie question

I'm trying to find out the name of a movie that had the story of a Janitor who worked in a church. The church found out he couldn't write when they asked him to sign a document, and he just put an "X" which led to him being fired. To make a long story short, he became a millionaire, and still only signed documents with an "X"

I think this was a trilogy of Maughams.

    Thank you.

Ahh yes...the wonderful James Hayter (Pickwick) in the three-storied film Trio (1950).

This story has also been filmed for TV at least twice. Once in the 1960s in black and white with Richard Pearson as the verger and once in colour in the 1980s, as part of the Tales of the Unexpected series, with Richard Briers as the verger.

In the later version, presumably for PC reasons, the verger sets up a chain of tea-shops instead of a chain of tobacconists as in the original story.

But both have Maugham's wonderful punchline, when the man who is buying him out discovers he can't read and and write and says "What on earth would you have been now if you had been able to read and write ?". To which he replies "I can tell you that sir, I would be verger of St Peter's ".

The Sanatorium story in Trio Michael Rennie had suffered from T.B .himself in 1944 so needed little direction in portraying the pain of T.B and the stigma that went with it those days he spent many months in a Santorium
