This fantastic period piece and pretty good film was shot on locations in the East End of London in 1967. Where exactly were those wonderful streets ? Are any still standing ? Why does Lulu look younger now than she did then ?

Hi Stephen, Many years ago I knew I was going to be in that area in a few weeks time so I re-watched it to try and help me find one or two of the streets. There is a street name if you look closely towards the end of the film, I looked it up in my trusty London A-Z and it was in the there in the East End. When I got there the street looked completely different, not the same one that was in the film. Hope this helps. Love the film though, Judy Geeson looks fab :-)

Much of the East End of London suffered extensive remodelling - by the Luftwaffe during WWII.

When I was a kid, in the 1960s I remember vast areas of Rubbleopolis and whole streets with corrugated iron fencing along either side.

Since then, much of it has been rebuilt, especially the areas on the edges of the City which has spread out beyond the square mile, and towards docklands.

The IMDb lists locations of The Isle of Dogs, Poplar and Wapping. But although the streets still exist there has been a huge amount of redevelopment in that area, the building of modern Docklands so I don't reckon much to your chances of still finding it.

Go to the area and ask in a few pubs

That big building, on the west side of Johnson Street, just south of the railway, looks like it could be a school - or be used as a school in a film

The school on Johnson Street is now 'luxury' flats.

Here's an aerial photo. If you click on 'bird's eye' you can see it better

Can't find much about it, apparently it closed around 1965

'Inspirational' book and film under discussion at Docklands Museum

    06 March 2009

AN inspirational book and film will be the topic of discussion at the Museum of London Docklands tomorrow (Saturday).

To Sir, With Love was written by E R Braithwaite about his experiences as a young black teacher in the post war East End and was made into a hugely successful film starring Sidney Poitier.

A discussion at the West India Quay museum explores whether the book and the film told the real story and asks how well they captured Braithwaite's radical innovations and how accurately the school was portrayed in the novel.

The informal study day will explore some of the complex and intriguing issues raised by Braithwaite's book, including progressive state education in post war Britain, the black post war presence in London and in the film itself and its depiction of life in the East End.

Speakers will include actor, writer and broadcaster Burt Caesar, Fielding, professor of education at the Institute of Education Michael, East End historian and ex pupil at St George-in-the-East Alfred Gardner, teacher Michael Newman and film historian and author Jim Pines.

I believe that the film was shown at the Museum recently - does anybody know what size screen they have there?
