I think some scenes were filmed at Liskeard Station in Cornwall, although there was a lot of studio work as well. I remember reading somewhere that filming had to be interrupted frequently in the studio as the London blitz was causing them problems.

According to John Huntley's "Railways on Screen" - "the third version of Arnold Ridley's story was enlivened by the personalitty of Arthur Askey but suffered from the fact that it was shot almost entirely in the Lime Grove Studios at Shepherd's Bush and is, in consequence, sadly lacking in railway atmosphere."

It's one of my favourite films too. It's something to do with Cornwall, steam trains and Linden Travers... the opening credits set the mood perfectly. I do also find it amusing!

I must have watched it countless times and never tire of it.

"Knobs, lovely knobs....." Was Kathleen Harrison aware of the double-meaning, I wonder

Reminds me also of the scene in "Backroom Boy" where Googie Withers announces to Askey that she had been "torpedoed"

"Well, I didn't do it" exclaims Askey

    Risque for the times?

Liskeard Station in Cornwall was indeed used for some of the location shots.

Filming was also done at Dawlish Warren and Teignmouth in Devon.

On a railway location theme, I still like to believe Buggleskelly (Oh, Mr Porter!) is an actual station and that it was filmed in Northern Ireland.

It loses its charm somewhat really knowing it was filmed near Basingstoke...:

When they are discussing the excursion to Connemara......"Deer on the hills"....

"Ah! yes, but it's cheaper in town"..................

Aha, do I spot a memorable quotes from Oh Mr Porter link brewing?

Deer in the hills is very good....

I like when Albert, Jeramiah and William are enjoying breakfast and Albert says to William "call it living off the land" to which Porter replies, "Hmm Danish, you're not bothered which land...."

Or the prelude to a fight in which, naturally, one has to firstly step on one's coat and then in retaliation knock a matchbox of one's shoulder before the fisticuffs can begin in earnest....

    Lol!

Yeah, that scene always used to amuse me, must be on old Southern Irish custom.

Well, as you may have gathered I am new to this forum, but have looked in at the threads several times.....

My interests are, as you may have gathered, all things Will, Ealing and classic sixties stuff such as "If", "Up the Junction", "Percy","Here we go round the Mulberry Bush" ,"Blow up", you get the general idea..........

I thought I remembered that there was a remake of this film made in the 80s (?) and I had the daft idea that Cannon and Ball were involved. Now when I look for this I can't find any TV or film version from that time, and C&B only made The Boys in Blue.

Does anybody know anything about this? Is there anything that could have put this idea in my head? Perhaps I read that they were thinking about a remake. Could there have been a TV version?

For those of you like myself who've nothing to do except play with boys' toys all day, here's an article i've been saving for all of you published during the 1931 making of the film; and intended for budding engineers of the day planning on saving all their threepences for Christmas and the kit that will help them build the replica locomotive and bridge depicted in "The Ghost Train".

Oh, and by the way. (Post #17) The article is about eight (count 'em, 8!) pages long, so just keep on clicking on the forward/backward arrows in the top left hand corner when you get to the first page.

Slightly weirdly, Cannon and Ball's 'Boys in Blue' was screened on ITV4 today - the first time I think I've ever seen it on TV - though I only managed to catch the end of it. It's actually a reworking of Will Hay's 'Ask a Policeman', so this is probably where there might be some confusion about it being a remake of 'The Ghost Train'. I'm going to start a seperate location thread about the film as it covers a lot of Elstree/Avengerland ground

There was a Danish version Spøgelsestoget made in 1976. But there's no sign of Cannon & Ball in that
