I watched this film over the weekend and have been puzzling over the same questions. I'm not sure that the cottage was a mock-up - the fire scenes could have been clever special effects. Not far from where I live they did something similar for a Pie in the Sky episode using an empty house which was renovated and sold after the filming. A clue to the locations is the newspaper Stanley Baxter is reading in one scene - the Bucks Free Press, which is a High Wycombe newspaper. For some reason (a hunch) I was thinking it was the Great Missenden - Wendover or even Bledlow area but I could be wildly wrong. I need to dig out the film and have another look.
