Having just looked at the sexiest actress section I saw Pier Angelli picture and this jogged my mind for a film I saw her star in and far as I remember was broadcast on the BBC in 1979 that I would like to watch again.

The film was about the invasion of Italy and liberation of Rome following a group of America soldiers. Pier Angelli had blonde hair at the time and was the love interest of a American officer. The only other part I remember was the Americans hosing down Italians civilians because of a outbreak of typhoid.

I've looked up Pier Angelli films on the IMDB and can't match this film with anything listed.

It could be Teresa (1951) although here it was the hero, John Ericson, who was blonde not Pier Angeli.

The problem is Pier Angelli only had a very small role at the end of the film so maybe she's not that high up the cast list.

You've got to understand I was 18 and it Pier Angelli.

I think this film was on a few monthgo. I can't recall it's name though. It is an episodic film. The soldiers are working their way from the invasion on through Italy. They go through various cities and towns and each city or town has it's own little story to tell involving the each of the soldiers.

'Battle of the Bulge' perhaps, with Robert Ryan, Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson etc?

You are the right track. If I could just figure out the name.

Pier Angeli had a twin sister, also an actress, called Marisa Pavan, perhaps it was one of her films.

If it was Pavan it would have to be What Price Glory? except that is set in WWI and France. Nothing else on her credits looks remotely likely.

In Teresa she has a lead role, so it doesn't seem likely to be the film sought. Otherwise, The Battle of the Bulge seems possible, but the geography is wrong again.

Having searched IMDB I think that the film I was thinking of was A Walk In The Sun with Dana Andrews and Richard Conte. However it was made in 1945 and Angeli would have been 13. But IMDB cast list doesn't show any women in the film at all. Yet if it is the film I am thinking of there were a few women in it at different times in the film. One of them had a baby that was hungry and the woman has an affair with a soldier while they are in the town. A Walk In The Sun is about a group of soldiers making their way inland from town to town. I am sure this is the film I was thinking of as I had never seen it before and knew about it. Halliwells film guide says that it just concerns one day but that isn't as I recall it.

    That sounds like The Victors

Yes that's the one I am thinking of not A Walk In The Sun. It was on a few months ago and I had seen it before but couldn't remember much about it. At the end there is a firing squad in the snow. Frank Sinatra sings Have Yourself A Merry Little Xmas over it.

It can't be her sister Marisa Pavon because I didn't know who Pier Angelli was until I read the name off the credits at the end of the movie. It's definitly not 'The Victors' because I've seen it recently and that follows a group of soldiers through Northern Europe.

Was it perhaps Darby's Rangers (from late 50s)? That film involved US troops invading Italy, not sure about the liberation of Rome though. Starred James Garner and Ed Byrnes, and several actresses unknown to me.

IMDB says the film includes the involvement of the soldiers with women. How unusual.

So, if it's definitely a Pier Angeli film, it's probably The Battle of the Bulge because the IMDb is unlikely to have missed an entire Angeli film. Also, TBOTB is the only film with Pier Angeli where her name appears far down the cast list, suggesting she has a cameo role.

I think either you're wrong about Italy or you're wrong about Angeli.

Could be that or maybe even The Big Red One or The Devils Brigade.

I'm beginning to wonder whether it's set it Italy. It was the spraying of powder to stop the outbreak of typhus which was the other stand out moment of the film I can remember. Wghat is strange is that I've only discovered in the last five years that it did happen in Italy following the fall of Rome. So I have two facts that even if I was drunk when it was shown of a Friday I can't have made them up.

The only other war film in IMDB which it could be is 'Every Bastard a King' which set in the Six Day War but there is no review and no mention whether this film was shot in black and white.

Pier Angeli's American GI boyfreind in BATTLE OF THE BULGE was played by none other than Telly Savalas. She didn't have blonde hair in the film.
