For me last night an early 60's British musical extravaganza, started with the Joe Brown classic "What A Crazy World ! " followed by Billy Fury in "I've Gotta Horse"- brillant stuff

Last night I watched West 11 from 1963 starring Alfred Lynch, Kathleen Breck, Eric Portman, Diana Dors, Kathleen Harrison, Freda Jackson, Finlay Currie, Peter Reynolds, Patrick Wymark, Harold Lang, Marie Ney and Francesca Annis.

Alfred Lynch plays Joe Beckett a young man with very little money who roams from job to job, short of money he is approached by Richard Dyce played by Eric Portman to commit a murder.

A very good crime/drama film directed by Michael Winner. Good use of London film locations which are mainly filmed in the Notting Hill area. A very strong performance from Alfred Lynch, Diana Dors is also very good as Georgia an estranged single parent who has a soft spot for Joe. Kathleen Breck has Joe's on-off girlfriend Ilsa is very good too.

Time is My Enemy. 1954. Dennis Price, Rene Asherson, Patrick Barr,

Duncan Lamont , Susan shaw & Bonar Colleano. A Vandyke Picture! Price

suitably sly as the villain of the piece . A slim Duncan Lamont & William Franklyn

as "the old Bill'! Good stuff!

The Net (1953) DVD-R. Fine spy/thriller with James Donald leading a group of scientists developing a supersonic aircraft, is information leaking out? Suspicion falls on the team including Herbert Lom, Patric Doonan, Muriel Pavlow and Noel Willman. The special effects hold up reasonably well in the air at least, but the story is sufficiently strong to make those short comings irrelevant.

Orson Welles' Macbeth1948. Courtesy of the ABC. The cheap (Republic

Studios) budget shows but I thought it was brilliant. Although Orson & Edgar

Barrier (as Banquo) resemble Mongol War Lords more than Scottish Noblemen!!

Supposedly Welles made this in 21 days! Truly remarkable!!

I love that film! AFAIK it's the only film noir version of a Shakespeare play ever made. Terrific stuff.

I watched The Zoo Gang. The episode featured Kieron Moore and was lively, fast-paced fun. I followed this with a couple of episodes of The Masked Marvel, not as good as Spy Smasher but very entertaining.

Joe Macbeth is indeed a Shakey 'noir', but I meant 'proper' Shakespeare, not pastiches. JM is a really good film IMHO and one that I would love to see again.

I have heard Olivier's Hamlet described as a 'noir' version but I thik it's more Universal horror than 'noir'.

I'm still perservering with "George and the Dragon". I suspect Mrs C thinks it's not even "of historical interest" - to use Capn Waggett's wonderful and so apposite phrase - but she's very polite!

A miserable night on the telly, so we got out our DVD of 'Send me no Flowers', with Doris Day and Rock Hudson.

What a treat! This must be the tenth time we've seen this film, and it seems to get better every time. Doris does her usual act, and Rock is brilliant as the dutiful husband who mistakenly thinks he's got only weeks to live. His neighbour and buddy is played by Tony randall, who does it so well. Making the best of his small part is Paul Lynde, who plays a camp, gossipy funeral park director.

And a happy ending that makes you slap your thigh and jump up to pour another Martini. Ah!

The Day of the Jackal(1973)Hadn't seen it for several years. Purchased in HMV for £3.

I could never tire of watching this. Shot on location in London, Genoa, the South of France and Paris, the pace of this thriller is relentless. Michael Lonsdale and Tony Britton and are a two of an excellent supporting cast to Edward Fox in the lead role as a ruthless assassin. One of the best UK films of all time IMO.

    Credited as British/French.

    Zulu Dawn (1979)

Free copy that came in the Daily Mail some time ago.

Quite enjoyed it,though something seemed to being lacking despite the great cast.

Blind Corner (1963) DVD-R. This corker from Mancunian Films has a distinct Film Noir quality about it. Starring William Sylvester as a blind composer and Barbara Shelley as his wife, other thesps include Alex Davion and Mark Eden. Contains a nice plot twist which I certainly didn't see coming too which is always nice
