Just in case people think that New Order are a bunch of miserable Mancunians (bit unfair as Gillian comes from Stockport) here they are with Every Little Counts from their 1986 LP Brotherhood. Check Barney's vocals on the first verse (and the fact they decided to use that take). The exquisitely beautiful coda sounds to me as if someone in the group liked the score for the film Badlands (particularly the Carl Orff and Saint-Saëns) as do I. For the end bear in mind this was the final track on the original vinyl release (CD reissues have added tracks).

Not ignoring you Agutterfan.......its just been hectic here
I was only teasing, honest. Knowing you're in Scotland, when I posted the Garbage video I wondered if you liked Scotish singers like Shirley Manson or did chanteuses have to be all European and exotic ! Here's a young lady overlooked now, Louise Wener of Sleeper and their excellent video for Vegas. Love the airstewardess outfit!

There seems to be a problem with that clip Agutterfan, its all pixelated & distorted which is a pity as it sounds quite good.....
Not heard of any of the names you mentioned.......but I do like Eddi Reader....she's Scottish, but I'm not..
Where did you get the idea that I'm from Scotland..
I live in Devon ( but was born & raised in Plymouth).......my wife is half Scottish, perhaps that's what confused you....
Never mind.....I went to Scotland once & found a £10 in a phone box.....and sampled the delights of Battered Haggis
    Cheers

ps I'm listening to this at the mo......& its a hoot

Sorry about that, you must have mentioned your wife as being Scottish, that's where I must have got it from. The Sleeper video plays fine, slight pixillation at various points but the sound is great. Try it on youtube directly. Here's proof that US TV shows are much better at using music than British ones. I discovered this band through the Eliza ("Faith") Dushku TV series Tru Calling. An Anglo-Canadian group, Stars with their third single Elevator Love Letter, also on their debut LP Heart. This is the official video, picture not great, sound slightly distorted, but I love it. I've included a better audiofile version also so you can listen to it in all its pristine glory.

No worries Agutterfan.....I suppose all our brains are getting a bit worn out....
Anyhow.....yours truly was acting general Taxi Driver early this morning and gave me good reason to tune into Brian Matthews "Sounds of the 60's"......and wallop...great to hear this old Van McCoy song given the unique Betty Everett treatment.....

    Cheers

Pick and mix playlist for me tonight

Also lots of 80's stuff and earlier, Womack & Womack, Nick Kershaw, Nina Simone.

Young Paolo Nutini is a real gem, talent in that young lad.

It was stunning wasn't it, I watched it on iplayer and for me the performance of the evening. I would love BBC television to give more time to English folk music (the sale of folk albums rose by 20% last year), BBC Scotland has Celtic Connections and Transatlantic Sessions which receive excellent reviews so surely BBC England can do something as well.

Definitely the Performance of the Evening Paul......

It put me in mind of Kate Rusby''s Live performance of My young man which she did with a Brass section' I saw her perform it at the Lowry in Manchester....Unforgettable

Here's Sarah Cracknell with the boys in St Etienne and Nothing Can Stop Us Now. Why this wasn't No.1 for weeks I never know. By the way, Kylie fans might like to know she does a good cover version on the b-side of Confide With Me.
