For me, easily the best channel on the box.
I can always find something to watch on it, the themed nights are superbly compiled (check out tonights journey back to the glory days of Disco!) and the absence of infernal ads is just the cream on top.
Long live the beeb!

Thanks for the heads up Cap'n, I like the old sing-a-long stuff (which reminds me, I've still to catch up on the Proms last night), I recently asked about the Pub song in the film 'Woman in a dressing gown', Oh oh Antonio, and when Barbara Windsor was covering for Elaine Paige on her Sunday lunchtime show she played it by Mrs Mills, wonderful stuff for nostalgia freaks.

When I launched this thread BBC4 was my favourite channel by far. Now, since being declared Digital Channel of the year, I regret that it is not so as BBC4, seems to me, to have been unfairly targeted as far as it's budget is concerned and is fifty shades paler than it was on 18.12.08.

Ah well, I did have have an hour of unalloyed joy this week watching what must be one of the best band documentaries: "Squeeze: Take Me, I'm Yours", so 4 'ain't dead yet'.

I am concerned that poor relation BBC4 is being set up for closure. Stage one was the emasculation of it's programmes, stage two has been reached when I heard questioning on the need for BBC4 as BBC2 fills the niche. I do hope my suspicious cynical mind is not reading something from nothing. Does anyone else believe that BBC4's appeal has nosedived due to the content? If so, is it a conspiracy to close?

That's the 3rd or 4th time that has been rumoured in the few years that BBC4 has been running. It seems to be suggested whenever media "journalists" run out of other ideas or any real stories

Dislike R4. Too slow and boring for me. Now Absolute 80's, that's the radio for me.

This is about the TV channel, BBC4, rather than about BBC Radio 4.
You will grow to appreciate Radio 4 and realise that it's the best radio station in the world

Even if BBC4 only aired for 1.5 hours a week to show Arne Dahl it would still get my vote for the best TV channel at the moment, but, seeing as it also shows a lot of other programmes that - to me - are unmissable it gets my vote without question. Worth the price of the licence fee by itself, it's the channel I check the listings for first and has been for a long time now.

And Radio 4 is my listening of choice too - along with Radio 4 Extra...

Yes all the Fours:- TV including C4, Radio and 4ex (radio not anything Australian). My daughter, now of mature years, was expressing alarm the other day that she tunes to R4. 'I hope I am not getting like dad' overheard on the telephone). Ripost: One is not cranky or odd just because a radio programme features in my daily routine!

BBC 4 on the other hand is good for TOTPs reruns, but other than that I prefer Yesterday, Dave and BB3.

Radio 4 is not the classical music station, that's Radio 3. Radio 4 is for news, drama, comedy, arts (inc film/tv) and all kinds of wonderful things.

BBC Four is my favourite TV channel - a sanctuary for intelligent, innovative and inspirational programming ... Wallander, The Killing, The Bridge, Borgen, Only Connect/Victoria Coren, Legends, thoughtful biography-dramas, wonderful documentaries, themed nights, archive re-runs: The Avengers, I Claudius, Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads ... etc and its an advert-free haven.

It appears to me that the 5 NUMBERED' BBC RADIO's worsen as they go down. Radio 1, Radio 1 Xtra, Radio 2, Radio 3, Radio 4.

It's still boring. Need some 80's TV Radio and I'll be happy.
