name='davidb']now that jeff buckley is in the charts ,i wonder if theyll rerelease the other song hes famous for " hi ho silver lining " ?
Davidb, surely that`s by Jeff Beck ?![]()
name='billy bentley']davidb , I'm not so sure Marvin's "Grapevine" counts as a cover ? They had something of a production line going at Hitsville and it appears to me that everyone pretty much recorded everything for their lps. Many Motown hit songs appear on many different artists LP's. If I remember correctly, Marvin's version was released as a b-side and the British dj's flipped it. Not trying to be nit picky as Marvin's version is much better than G & The P's.
youve got a point i know , because it was a bit of a hit production line at motown in those days . nevertheless he wasnt the first to do it and that still surprises some people even now

nah ,jeff buckley .im sure
One of the greatest cover's must be Otis Redding's version of "Satisfaction", Keith Richard is on record as saying it's superior to the Stones original. I've also heard Burt Bacharach acknowledge that Aretha Franklin's "I Say A little Prayer" is better than his Dionne Warwick original.
And Sid's "My Way" is a classic too.![]()
I think this was better than the original.
When were gold lame shorts and faux jungle outfits fashionable? I must have missed that..

Other favourites include:
Hallelujah by John Cale (he was the first to cover it and everyone to do so since has followed his arrangement)
Walk on By by both The Stranglers and Isaac Hayes
Hurt by Johnny Cash
Not So Manic Now by Dubstar
As I'm sure DavidB is aware, it is by Beck and not Buckley.
i wont make a fuss ,though its obvious that it was by buckley
this is a bit of a difficult one that you might at first think "no" but paul youngs version of "wherever i lay my hat " is better than the marvin gaye original IMHO . the moody arrangement and repentent way paul sings the lyrics are better than the original which sounds upbeat and jolly and doesnt suit the song .
Must beg to diiffer on the Marvin v.Mr Young davidb. Nicky Thomas' "Love Of The Common People" is a truly great cover, although I'm not sure who did the original.
wilson picketts " land of a 1000 dances " is much better than the original by chris kenner which sounds a bit dull in comparison![]()
What about pointless covers?
I could never understand why Billy Joel's "Just the way you are" was covered by so many MOR artists when the original was pretty MOR itself.
In my younger days my dad would have Radio Two on and I'd hear a version of it played and I'd just think why? Why not play the original?
Davidb - I'm reluctant to argue with you, as you appear to be a Roger McGuinn fan, as I am. But I'll bet you as much money as you want that Hi Ho Silver Lining was a Jeff Beck record, produced by Mickie Most. It's not hard to prove ! (On the other hand, maybe Buckley did a cover version ?)
Robert Palmer's version of Mercy, was brillaint.
lenny
I am a bit confused by certain posts in this thread ... is there a disagreement about who recorded Hi Ho Silver Lining?
The famous version is by Jeff Beck, released only a few days after the original by The Attack.

However .... Jeff Buckley released a promo album called The Best of Jeff Beck inc Hi Hi Silver Lining.

State of Independence - The original from Jon & Vangelis is far superior to the Donna Summer version.
