So then, can the UK flag EVER actually be flown upside down?

I suppose it is how you define upside down. The Dame has rotated the image where as if you flipped the flag over it would be different.

Anyhow here is the flag flying from The Palace.

Don't forget the flag was here before photography. The flag rope ties would only have been on one side so it would have been easy to fly it 'flipped over'.

But which side is that if it isn't on a flag pole?

If you are the person making the flag then the ties would be put on the side where the white band is broad and uppermost on the top corner.

Doh........, I wish I'd never mentioned the darn thing now, I don't know what it looks like from inside but it's wrong when looking at it from outside.

From 10-04-09 in this very thread, Bernardo was complaining about:
Cars on UK roundabouts that indicate right and turn left. Watch and see how many do it.

    and I said:
With a basic 4 way roundabout, if you want to take the third exit (turn right) then you should indicate right as you enter the roundabout - but you're turning left as you enter the roundabout. That's how the highway code says you should do it

But if you're taking the first exit then you shouldn't indicate right. I don't see many people do it.

    How soon people forget

    Steve
Not forgotten. I really really hate that and occasionally vigorously point out an offending car to my co-pilot who does also mention that I have complained once or twice before.

I've read it and it's just proved me right. Think of a flag as having heads and tails, like a coin. Turn the flag over, so you're looking at the "tails" side, and it looks totally wrong - but it's not physically upside down. Now, turn it back to heads - then just rotate it through 180 degrees, so that the bottom is now at the top. It's now upside down, but it looks no different, i.e. it still looks correct. Doctor Frankenstein obviously put your brain in upside down when he created YOU!

But you, or that web site, haven't answered my question, how do you tell which way up the flag is if it isn't on a flag pole?

It is getting a bit wearisome, the vast majority of official flags would be hung correctly, some ordinary folk who hang bunting, etc; simply don't know, maybe we should just leave it at that now, here's one flag I'd happily see burnt forever though lol!.............

What irritates me? Right now I'm suffering from Olympic Torch fatigue. I'm sick to death of seeing the bloody thing on TV and all the pseudo razzmatazz that's going with it. I'm told that this 'ancient' tradition started, not with the Greeks, but the Nazis in the 1936 games. If that is so it's surprising to me that the Jewish community haven't protested especially since we live in an age of political correctness and apology culture. I for one would wholeheartedly support them.

I am more than irritated with Euro 2012, I am sick to death of it monopolising two TV channels night after night, and I feel very sorry for all those other football haters who don't have Sky.

I can quite understand your feelings about football "monopolising" TV night after night and I am a football fan. However, with most of the country now served by freeview, aren't there enough channels offering an alternative schedule?. On Wednesday night, there was no football, the schedules still failed to excite me, as usual, thank goodness for DVD's.!
