I'm wondering what versions of "Robin Hood" other than Erroll Flynn's are worth showing the family ? We're not really interested in the more recent stuff, should we be ? How does the 50's TV Series hold up ?

The Richard Greene series is great and still holds up well IMHO, The Boy Wonder enjoys watching it. The Greene feature film (Sword of Sherwood Forest) is also worth a look as is the Richard Todd Disney version (Robin Hood and his Merrie Men) and the Douglas Fairbanks silent version.

Think it depends upon the age of your audience. As a kid I loved A Challenge for Robin Hood though it may not hold up terribly well.

I saw Robin and Marian as a teenager and that's remained as my favourite Robin Hood film ever since. The Patrick Bergin version (very muddy I seem to recall) was pretty good and I enjoyed the Robin of Sherwood series of the 80s due to its mystical sheen and Nickolas Grace being my Sheriff of choice.

I really liked the Patrick Bergin one but it got slated at the time by reviewers who insisted that anything American must be better though I suspect some of them were slightly embarassed when they finally saw the Costner version. Bandit of Sherwood Forest has Henry Daniell as the villain which means it gets an automatic 7/10 without even trying.

I rather enjoyed the KC version. His American accent didn't bother me,as neither did Eugene Pallette's in The Adventures Of Robin Hood and as for accuracy, well what is accurate in the legend of Robin Hood?

I don`t know much about the different versions. I only have Cosner`s `prince of thieves` but the best thing about that film is that Jack Wild is in it and the theme tune isn`t half bad!

This is my favorite, too. Great cast (some of the best acting Sean Connery ever did imo), witty script ("You never wrote." "I don't know how." lol) and the ending had me in tears.

I agree. Kevin Costner's version is not that bad, actually. It's entertaining for the kids and Alan Rickman acts everyone else off the screen - he is just superb in this.

Yes, I agree that Rickman is very good in it, though not as good as Jack

I bought 2 Robin Hood DVDs from a stall over here, both starring Richard Greene &

the cast from the TV series as well as several guest stars.

Robin Hood "The Movie" & Robin Hood "Quest For The Crown"

Excellent colour & sound & curious in that several of the cast play different parts.

    Both released by ITC (1991).

Thank you all and keep the comments coming. By the way the Disney cartoon has tunes by the vastly under appreciated Roger "King of the Road" Miller !

    Hi.

I do my best. You are welcome.

By the way, I omitted Ivanhoe both at the cinema and television. Also I believe the Richard Todd version, made by Walt Disney was also, if my memory serves me correctly, later

re-issued as ROBIN HOOD AND HIS MERRIE MEN.

    Alan French.

PS: Green tights suit me this time of year.

I actually think the 70s TV version with Martin Potter, Diane Keen, David Dixon, Yvonne Mitchell, William Marlowe and John Abineri is the best Hood adaptation ever, in its closeness to the true legend at least, and Potter himself the most convincing other than Greene or Connery to have ever taken the role. Even in his best horror and exploitation work, he occasionally had a tendency towards theatricality, but not here. Should be compulsory viewing in schools!!!
