And the topic should of course read "John Mills's Club"

This is "The Berkeley Club" from the SHIRLEY'S WORLD episode The Berkeley Caper.
The odd thing about it is that it has three letterboxes on the front door, one of which is clearly labelled "JOHN MILLS". This is odd as Sir John Mills actor was a memeber of the St. James Club and this is not it.

My comment isn't about Sir John's club although perhaps he preferred not to have it filmed at his actual club and then be tracked by fans...but rather it is a note of thanks for the photos. Somehow I missed this series and am happy to hear about it.
ShirleyM looks very pretty and winsome here, and I rather like it.
Best wishes,
Barbara
He was also a member of The Garrick unsurprisingly.

I'm glad I didn't post up any photos of Shirley in the strip clubs (see previous post) as this may have disillusioned you.

Hi, Anthony,
No disillusionment. I've seen Shirley in that environment in one film or another, which is okay by me. But perhaps it's my having seen the one side that made the photos you posted seem particularly charming.
This was an interesting thread and one that is spurring me to look at the history of men's clubs, e.g. the St. James and the Garrick, neither of which resonate with me but probably should.
Thanks again,
Barbara
I have no idea what significance these clubs have either.....
Hoever, in the theatre who's who of 1948, John Mills' is listed as Garrick, but in 1961, it is Garrick and Green Room...........
Given that some of these guys back in the day listed their home addresses in such as who's who, I don't think they were bothered about being bothered by fans.......
The days of celebrity and locusts were yet to come.

Tony
I watched this episode recently, when I was down at Andrew P's. Unfortunately, we didn't take much notice of the locations.

Hi, Moor Larkin:
Good point about actors not being bothered back then. It's hard to imagine those days when actors felt free to list that information. Thanks for the note about the name change for the Garrick.
All best,
Barbara
Sorry, I expressed that badly......name='theuofc'] Thanks for the note about the name change for the Garrick.
Green Room seems to be another Club...........![]()

All the pictures are Hamilton Place W1…..
…..except this one which is Fitzmaurice Place, looking out across Berkley Square.
Number 3 Hamilton Place is now under the Intercontinental Hotel.

Thanks's Alan - it was the wrong John Mills all the time.
See Wikipedia Siegi Sessler - "Unsure of what family may still be alive, he found his Uncle Max, who had a restaurant in Swiss Cottage, London. In an office upstairs, he and his partner John Mills, with whom he later started The Milroy Club, which, upon the demise of their partnership, became Les Ambassadeurs."
The John Mills on the letter box is not the actor, but another John Mills, a Polish emigre, who with his wife Kitty founded Les Ambassadeurs club, the building in the photograph.
He was the physical opposite of the actor, being well over 6 foot 6" tall and built like a heavyweight boxer, which he used to be.
"Big" John, knew "little" John very well, Les A being the haunt of royals, actors and celebrities from its founding during the war, right up to the late 1980s when family ownership of the club ceased.
The Club appears in other films including a Bond film and the Beatles film Help.
The Mills were great friends of all the movie stars, Orson Welles, Judy Garland, Lauren Bacall and Bogey. They would often stay as guests in their home, above the club.
