Hello, Rollingstone. When it comes to finding old British TV info like this, you could do worse than ask the very knowledgable folks at The Mausoleum:

Hey folks,
Just joined...I'm presently hooked on the TV series, "A Family at War", about the Ashton family in WW2, which was broadcast on Granada between 1970-2. Very compelling series! Anyway, was just wondering where the filming was? Was it actually filmed in Liverpool, where the story is set?
Cheers,

Hello, Rollingstone. You may wish to visit a new website dedicated to "A Family at War." Go to www.baylor.edu/afamilyatwar. This site includes an episode guide with complete storylines, cast photos, a slideshow with theme music, links to other sites, and information on how to join a discussion group (of which the series creator and principal writer, John Finch, is a member).
Reading this is stirring up Ralph Vaughn Williams's Symphony No 6 in my mind. Must dig out my CD collection to play it.

I met a fella on holiday in Goa a few years ago. He worked on that programme behind the scenes, camera man or production can't remember. He was telling me that they shot the scene at the beginning with the flag in the sandcastle, on a beach at Southport.
I should imagine that was true, I recall the Liverpool Echo reporting on the filming of FAW and how they were using Southport and Formby sands for the filming of the desert war scenes. It is a beautiful stretch of land.
