I've lived in the area for 25 years and I'm 90% certain that this is at the junction of Gayton Road, Willow Road and Well Walk in Hampstead NW3. The shop now sells pottery and has been there ever since I can remember. I can probably take a 'now' shot of it tomorrow.

If not that shop could be the one opposite the Flask pub, on Back Lane/Flask Walk.

Yes, it does look more like that shop now that you mention it. The incline to the road the chap is walking from would suggest Back Lane rather than New End Square which I think is a lot steeper. All will be revealed tomorrow.

I went and photographed both possible locations this afternoon but unfortunately I don't think either is the one unless the shop has had a major overhaul since filming. The first shot is on the corner of Gayton Road and Well Walk and the secong on Flask Walk and Back Lane.

Apart from the obvious format of the shops can anyone spot a clue to confirm either is the location? I can't

Just by looking at the photos, I think the pottery shop is the most likely. The general look is similar and I think the black posts in the other pic would probably have been there in the 60s. However, neither look totally convincing.

I'd be surprised if it were either one of Remy's excellently clear pics.

Both shops have small, obviously long-established, architectural details which indicate to me they are not the one.

For a start, neither of the right hand sides of the pictures look correct; in the screen grab we are looking for a painted or rendered 'smooth' doorway. The pottery shop is bare brick and has the distinct arch with 'keystone', and the other shop is a blocked up window which shows no other signs of architectural tampering to hide an old door aperture.

Most telling though are the fretwork grille (or tiling pattern?) under the window of the green shop and the wrought ironwork under the left hand window of the pottery shop, which both seem quite 'established' and would lead me to discount either shop.

Here's another question though - was the pottery shop seen in the girl about town' promo which was made to introduce Linda Thorson to Avengers fans...? I am sure I've seen it somewhere before...

    Found it!

After realising this location wasn't either of the ones I'd photographed earlier today I tried to visualise in my head the streets of Hampstead and work out what other shops could be on a corner. I then had a eureka moment and was pretty sure it was just 2mins away from where I live in Belsize Park. Sure enough it is. Although the shop is covered in scaffolding (the shop has been closed and boarded up for about 15 years) there are tell tale signs that its the one.

Firstly, the black triangular like features to the top of the photo are there as are the three smaller panes of glass and the three long rectangular panes too. The door (to the right of shop) is there also though is boarded up as well.

I can photograph this soon as its pitch black now but this is definitely on the corner of Belsize Lane and Belsize Place. If it looks familiar then its just three or four doors away from the clothes boutique (IIRC) in Smashing Time.

Here is a pic I found without the scaffolding Belsize Lane on Flickr - Photo Sharing! There was an Oddbins there and the person claims it had been a pub, however I don't remember a pub being there.

Thats the one though the Oddbins is still there as its at the other end of that block just out of shot to the far left. There certainly wasn't a pub there as I remember it being a shop (before it closed) selling cards and odd little curios. There was a pub directly opposite the shop, The Belsize Tavern which sadly closed two or three years back and is now one of these modern minimalist watering holes.

Excellent work Remy. I'm suprised that there were two other candidates so similar.

I'll post up another location I suspect to be Hampstead next week.

    Cheers,

Tony, the pottery shop Remy mentions is at the top of the shot on your two pics! Pics taken from Willow Road looking North.

Tavistock is right, the pottery shop is to the left of that gothic looking building in the background at the top of the hill. To be precise, this is at the junction of Willoughby Road and Willow Road.

Can take a 'now' shot for you in the next few days if you like?

Yes please 'now' photos would be much appreciated for the guide.

Could I also beg a favour and a couple of Belsize Lane photos too?

Both those photos are at the junction of Belsize Court Garages and Belsize Place, the pub that Remy mentions as now being a gastropub is in the background.
