    Hi Clive

Thanks for the reply and sorry for the delay...I only logged onto the site again today.

I was in Sherborne last week so its nice to know there is another location fan not a million miles away!

As I recall I think "The Browning version" was shot in Sherborne...?

Do you ever pay visits to London and the Borehamwood area on location spotting...?

THE BROWNING VERSION (1994) was filmed at Milton Abbey.

Sherborne was 'Brookfield School' in GOODBYE, MR. CHIPS (1969):

    RT Guide

Rex Harrison and Richard Burton both had the sense to send Terence Rattigan's script back, and not even an Oscar nomination can hide the fact that this is one of Peter O'Toole's least distinguished performances.

The fact that John Williams and Leslie Bricusse were also nominated for best score is preposterous, as the songs in this adaptation of James Hilton's delightful novel are shocking.

    John Betjeman's documentary about Sherborne,

"An Abbey town of golden ironstone - a town of schools",

is included in the 'Betjeman Collection' set of four DVDs.

I thought three of the songs were very good: "Fill The World With Love" (the school song); "You and I", sung by Petula Clark and the third one having lyrics that even when I ran the film in 1970 at the age of 23, I could identify with only too well...as Peter O'Toole looks through the class room window at the young boys running about happily in the school playground:

"Yesterday, I was their age, tomorrow they'll be my age,

Sooner, much sooner than they know.

And soon they all will ask, as every child must ask:

    Where Did My Childhood Go?"

I have been down to Wookey Hole and Croscombe many times to show the locals 'The Secret Cave' 1953 made by the Children's Film Foundation. The mill used is stil there and I have made a 'slide show' of the locations to go with the film. If I'm going again I will let you know...a pub meeting of us nutters would be amazing!

The 1953 countryside in The Secret Cave looked wonderful...even in black and white...and the mill and the village looked very picturesque.

Hi Mike, well I can give you a bit of ADVANCE spotting.

"Turn of the screw" to be shown on BBC at Xmas and featuring Sue Johnson, was filmed in Bath and also Norton Sub Hamden church.....but you probably knew that.

So I guess that puts me in your Taunton / Yeovil area.
