This is probably for those with access to old phone directories.



We are talking some time between 1964 and 1966. The area is probably South Hertfordshire/Watford/Barnet or a Northern NW.



Borehamwood 'Highstreet' Shenley Road would be the obvious choice - but nothing matches.

It's definitely not Barnet or Borehamwood, Radlett may be worth a look, it's been a while since I've been there but I recall a long shopping parade, with two different styles of architecture........

Radlett was certainly worth a look! The three brown shops, one white shop pattern stands out a mile on Wattling Street just south of the station.

British Telecom have a specialist website to check numbers for the hundred years up until 1967 (or so it appears):-

It may just be for residential addresses for people tracing their relatives. Other than that, a number of the "Kelly's" business directories are available but randomly spread about the country.

BT has given the rights to publish jpg images of old phone directories to Genealogy and Family History Records - Ancestry.co.uk - there are various levels of subscription, but for me being in New Zealand it costs an arm and a leg.



Good news is they have a 14 day free trial - which I have made good use of (10 nights of solid data mining with 4 days to make sure I cancelled my subscription without being charged).



Other good news is that a lot of UK Libraries have subscriptions so you can get the data there.



The search engine can be a bit of a pain for businesses - I found that it was often easier to go through directories by guessing the page number, and jumping around until I had the right page. Also pubs were often not listed (don't know why, but many were just not in the directories).
