As an ex-resident of Bristol (lived there at the time the series was filmed) I'd be happy to help out. Will have to dig out the episodes next time I'm delving in the archive (i.e. my loft !).
Many years later....
Was given the first season DVDs for Christmas and am currently revisiting the series.
Private Ear -
Opening shots of the massage parlour look like Kingsdown, but not 100% sure.
The Rolls looks as if it's driven to the beach near Aust.
Knock for Knock -
A long take follows Eddie as walks with two policemen through St.Nicholas' Market and down steps to Baldwin Street.
Erica and Eddie explore the antique shops of Clifton, walking down Boyce's Avenue, and along Waterloo Street. Focus on Waterloo Street is featured, and the shop is still there, although much reduced inside from the indoor market that it once was.
Eddie later visits the auction rooms on Regent Street, where he spots the Knight's van, which he follows in his car down Hensman's Hill to the end of Cornwallis Cresent. The action then magically switches to the other side of Bristol (possibly Totterdown ?) where his car is rammed.
The scene in the multi-story car park at the end of the episode is shot next to the Unicorn Hotel overlooking the Watershed. The car park is surprisingly still there !
Nine Tenths of the Law
More scenes filmed around Broad Street and St.Nicholas' Market, including Albion Chambers and All Saint's Court. The runaway father and child try to escape from Bristol across the Clifton suspension bridge (but are actually running the wrong way). Eddie questions one of the zookeepers at Bristol Zoo (white tigers on screen). Eddie questions the librarian on the passenger foot bridge above Bond Street (now enveloped by the Cabot Circus shopping centre). Footage of Harry H.Corbett's Landrover on St.James Barton roundabout.
Quite a few location scenes probably filmed in Ealing/West London area.
I'm A Believer
Nothing that looked like Bristol in this episode, but several sequences shot in Bath featuring the Starshine Cult, including gatherings outside the Pump Rooms/Cathedral, in Parade Gardens and in The Circus. Other scenes looked as if they were filmed in the surrounding area, but nothing easily identifiable. One sequence possibly shot in Little Venice.
The story features a cult very similar to one that was operating in the West Country at the time called - I think - Exegesis.
Guest star David Beames also starred in the Chris Petit feature Radio On, which included many scenes shot in Bristol.
The Partnership
Good establishing shot of Bristol followed by a sequence set on Bristol Bridge/Welsh Back, as Jenny Kelson in her Mini is followed by Ray in his Triumph Stag.
Later Eddie follows Jenny in Broadmead as she walks through the Arcade to her car parked in The Horsefair. Eddie jumps in a Ford Cortina taxi to follow her when she drives off.
Eddie follows Jenny to Leigh Delamere services where she meets Ray, and Eddie borrows a camera and then a car to pursue him.
Jenny meets Eddie at the Bristol Arts Centre in Kings Square where Brian is setting up his exhibition. Erica and Eddie attend the opening night.
Kevin Whately puts in an brief appearance as footballer Bobby Treen.
Listen to Me
Very little Bristol in this one. An establishing shot of Mel Shepherd's van arriving outside Radio West, plus some rooftop views of the Bristol skyline and the area in front of the radio station, plus a night shot of Eddie's car driving through the centre with the Hippodrome in the background.
Higher Ground
No Bristol locations in this one at all.
Stamp Duty
The most Bristol-centric of all the episodes so far.
Not sure about the dairy - could be in the St.Philip's Marsh area - but the milkman's round takes him to the junction of Windsor Terrace and Victoria Terrace in Clifton. His subsequent pursuit by Strickland's men take him from Sion Hill in Clifton down to the dock area and the Albion Docks boatyard and across the old New Cut railway bridge. Strickland's men later meet up with Strickland near the Clifton Suspension Bridge toll, and are then driven across the bridge in his Mercedes limo. Eddie appears outside his flat in the Royal York Crescent where Erica's lawn is being delivered. He's later seen exiting the Corn Exchange in Corn Street by one of the famous Bristol 'Nails'.
The Link-Up
No Bristol at all in this one.
Cool - and not just in a refrigerated sort of way ! Thanks for that extra info Geoffers.
