It contributes greatly to a mood in the film that only fans seem to want to pick up on - a sense of sadness and lucklessness. The dark continent lit up by fire.

Anybody else love that title sequence - I think it's one of the greats.
I do love that sequence, the whole film is very good, even with Emil in it

Huh, what's everyone got against poor Emil?

Final scene is very touching - 'let's talk about your father' - can't think of a better line there.

Could you imagine Richard Harris having a son like that? "Whooopee!"
The child actor was also in an episode of 'Tales of the Unexpected' it was called 'Galloping Foxley', With John Mills. It was a story of mistaken identidy.
One of the better Unexpected storys.

I still think its A V M's best movie, but yep all opinions are subjective. (But its still the best, lol )

The title sequence is very similar to a number of other films made by Lighthouse productions, most notably The Sea Wolves.

Poor old Emil, he does get a lot of stick, but you can't help but squeal at his lines in the early scenes (His best scene being where he says nothing, at the end of the movie)

I think I mentioned this before but the film had several lines of dialogue shot twice while others were re-recorded for a television release with ADR. So it doesn't suprise me to learn that some of the lines don't quite sync up while others have obviously been added later (I would rather have Witty treat my Hameroids)

I would still love to see A Wild Geese III, set prehaps either in present day with a retired Shaun Finn, sending a younger cast on a mission to rescue Emil (He could have really anoyed people and got himself in several scrapes lets face it and Paul Spurrier, could even come back from Thailand to play the part)
Or preferably, set before the first film, when all the characters were younger and when they first do a job together. Here's an idea, going with the second suggestion, who would you cast from the British (And some Scottish and German) actors of today in the roles?

Here's my choices, just for laughs:

Young Shawn Finn - James McAvoy
Young Rafer Janders - Jason Flemygn
Young Colonel Allen Faulkner - Luke Mably
Young medical orderly Witty - Andrew Lee Potts
Young Jesse - Chewit Ejafor
Young Sandy RSM - Tom Hardy
Young Pieter Coetze - Thomas Kretschmann
Sgt Jock Mctaggart - Ewan Mcgregor
Sgt Tosh Donaldson - Andy Serkis

Yes, but didn't Harris say the child was a product of an 'expensive English education' attending boarding school and whom he only saw at Christmas etc. That's a satisfactory explanation for me.

I've seen that episode of Tales, yes, it was very good, the end was in no way surprising but consistent.

I first saw this great British movie in May 81, it was the first video I ever hired, and I still think it is one of the most action packed movies ever. I love all the performances by the leads and most of the supporting cast are great as well. A film that I must dig out and watch again soon.

Don't misunderstand me.

I was objecting to the "without doubt". It is arguably his best, and you may be right - but "without doubt" is going to far, that's all There are considerable grounds for reasonable doubt - as I showed.

Considering he was only nine at the time I thought Paul Spurrier was OK as Emil. He was the right side of cute and his delivery of his line as he runs away from Harris is heartbreaking.

Paul Spurrier has also directed a couple of interesting films.

Underground (1998)

P (2005)

Jingle bells Batman smells ... I heard that at school Daddy.

And he appeared briefly in Hardwicke House the school-based sitcom that was pulled from the ITV schedules after two episodes in 1987 amidst much tabloid fury.

Roy Kinnear, Duncan Preston, Tony Haygarth, Pam Ferris, Liz Fraser, Rik Mayall, Ade Edmondson and John Fortune were also in it but it never seems to have surfaced again.

I have never seen it, but I would love too. Alas, I expect they will never surface.

Cheers for those links Bats. Interesting stuff. I remember watching at least one episode at the time and enjoying it (although as a teenage schoolboy the depiction of an anarchic educational establishment would have been right up my street).

However other than a sense of enjoyment I can't remember much else so I don't know if it was actually any good, or if it would stand up today.

Probably not .... it sounds very much a product of it's time so perhaps a few of us old farts might get the joke, but not enough of the required under-30 crowd are likley to get it so repeats look to be a non-starter.
