Default McVicar

A good old British Matserpeice - One of my favourites

Good acting from the singer Roger Daltrey which is a rarity

Tom Clegg hasn't directed many films but I rate this as his best.

See it if you havn't already

Well, i'm a long - term biased 'Who' fan, and have the DVD, and had the video before too...Daltrey's acting, varies considerably i think, and he's outdone by fellow singer, Adam Faith in this film.
The strongest element of the film, is the 'escape' sequence (and the music), but what ultimately lets the film down, is the fact that it's based on the (obviously biased and sympathetic) book 'McVicar by himself' which unsurprisingly tends to show the notorious armed -robber in a fictionalised and sympathetic light.

However, if viewed simply as fiction, it's an entertaining gritty film, and the direction/production lend it a truly authentic 'prison realism'.

Only shown once on Uk terrestrial tv, probably, because of the language...

Hi Aaron

Your right about Adam Faith but I still take my hat off to Roger for a good acting appearence.

I didn't know it has only had one tv showing. Interesting to know that.

I'm looking for a poster too if anyone has one

Thanks
Andy

There are some posters linked to from The Nostalgia Factory on the IMDb pages about the film.

Great film. Definately agree about Adam Faith. Faith was excellent in "Stardust" too.

The double DVD of "That'll Be The Day" and "Stardust" are a must-have. If only to see the maple-tree acting of Mr Ringo Starr.

McVicar. Great movie, great soundtrack, and Faith is really great. Don't think Daltrey ever made anything as good after this.

if you watch the scene where mcvicar arrives to meet his villain friends on the scooter ,youll notice its exactly the same one as rode by phil daniels in quadrophenia

And while we're spotting, im fairly sure Daltrey runs past the same parked cars and buildings twice during the escape sequence...

like quadrophenia it was made by the who films and like quad they dont get the background details right ,modern cars ,people in late 70s fashions etc .although to be fair they were both lowish budget films and id rather see a mk 3 cortina or intercity 125 than dodgy acting , lacklustre script or dialogue , bad editing or whatever ,i dont think either film would have stood the test of time otherwise

Must confess, I've never seen this as I've always been put off by the casting of Daltrey. I'm also aware that for a long time he had wanted to make a Kray Bros. film and then eventually "saw the light" on the nature of the Kray's enterprises and looked elsewhere. My lack of confidence in Daltrey as an actor, is in no way meant to belittle the one time Shepherds Bush sheet metal worker's ability to sing Peter Townshend songs, twirl a microphone or land a punch. I just could never see the inner thespian ?
