I enjoy watching this film as well. I had it on tape but splashed out on the DVD and found in the special features it had an alternate ending. One reason I love this film is for Joby Blanshard's proformance as Tawny Jakes. Pure ham at its best, brilliant stuff.

I'm a big fan. I wish there was a whole series about D.I. Harry Martineau. I like him so much I stole his name to use in a film I made, which had him hunting criminal clowns. I don't think anybody spotted the homage, but it made me happy.

Default Hell Is A City

As a Manchester lad at the time this film was made I get particular enjoyment, remembering all the locations in the film (some long gone). I bought the DVD mentioned elsewhere for a snip at £3.99 from Play.com (UK): DVDs, Music CDs, MP3s, Video Games, Books, Electronics & Gadgets - Free Delivery and found it thoroughly enjoyable. There are other posts on Britmovie about this film - do a search.

Yes, I recently purchased this Movie from Play.com too!

I don't recall where I read it, but I have read that the good folks of Manchester weren't too happy about having their City regarded as 'Hell'!

Though I guess back then if I had to work in a Lancashire Mill for 10 hours day amongst all that noise (Hindle wakes) I'd feel like I was in Hell too!

I don't think there's any traditional Mills operating today in Northern England, which is probably a blessing in disguise.......

It is a great film, i watched again last night. I have noticed however that over a thirty odd year period George A. Cooper never looked any older(or younger for that matter).
