I watched this again tonight. The blue ray version. Its so captivating. Does anyone know where the bridge scene was filmed? Or was it on a stage lot somewhere ...

BBC - BBC Radio 4 Programmes - Soul Music, Series 13, Rachmaninov, 2nd Piano Concerto
Rachmaninov's 2nd Piano Concerto, which was famously featured in David Lean's film "Brief Encounter", is one of the world's most popular pieces of classical. In this programme people describe the way in which Rachmaninov's 2nd Piano Concerto has touched and shaped their lives. The programme features a pianist from Taiwan whose memories of a repressive childhood were dispelled by the emotions contained within this music. Plus a story from an acclaimed pianist from Argentina who was told she would never play the piano again after a serious car accident, but who has recently performed this piece in New York. And finally an account of the place that this piece of passionate and heartfelt music played in the life of John Peel and his family, told by his wife Sheila Ravenscroft.
The concerto is also given historical and musical context in the programme by pianists Peter Donohoe and Howard Shelley.
I must be the only person the planet that has never seen "Brief Encounter" - or at least not the original. The version I saw was a very strange one with Sophie Loren. I did listen to radio programme mentions and found all the stories very moving !
haha good one.![]()
In brief encounter I like the very eloquent english accent of Celia Johnson, and of course Trevor Howard was very attractive.Their love seemed so innocent, and with the Rachmaninovs concert playing in the background it was a good film

Talking of parodies the recent re-availability of Diana Rigg's 'Three Piece Suite' series on DVD means we can now all enjoy 'Briefer Encounter', where she (Laura) and Alec (Peter Barkworth) have fallen on hard times to our amusement. Only 10 minutes or so but a lovely little skit.
Amazon only seem to have Region 1 version though.
Sorry Captain - I was referring to the Diana Rigg "Three peice Suite"
LOL! Mine is an ancient steam-driven player !
The role which eventually went to Richard Burton in the remake (which was an awful mistake) was originally set for Robert Shaw. He had a lucky escape, I think!
They aren't the only ones to make a parody, we made one too using characters from a sitcom we're working on based on the people of Woolwich in London:
We selected three scenes from the film and tried to film it as closely as possible to the manner in which the original was shot, let me know what you think. :-)
