did anyone see this movie when it was on BBC 1 during the christmas season?



Judi dench and bob hoskins star with will young in this comedy about a rich widow that buys a theatre

Sorry thirdlady but I thought it was very poor and that they had missed the chance to tell a good story.

I felt it was entertaining, without being anything out of the ordinary. Dame Judi's central performance was the main reason to watch (as always), but the eclectic casting of Thelma Barlow, Christopher Guest and Will Young also added to the curiosity. The period setting was nicely done, and Stephen Frears is always an "interesting" director even when he gets things wrong! If you enter into the right spirit, and don't expect a masterpiece, it's certainly watchable.

I thought it was a bit uneven. Couldn't fault the acting but thought it needed a greater subplot and overall the budget (+/- £10m) constraints told, especially the exteriors.

I enjoyed it, thought it was just the job after getting back from work & just letting it flow over me.



Will Young impressed me too, surprisingly, not a fan of his as a rule.
