I always thought Carter is set up right from the start, I mean they are on to him straight away, in the opening credits with Carter travelling in the train up North sitting opposite him on the train is the sniper hit man who kills him at the end. Blink and you will miss him, its definitely him though! Intriguing.

Your reading of the film isn't necessarily out of line with the statement that Carter is out for revenge. That there is an element of revenge in what he does, is not to say he is a nice or moral man. Quite the reverse. What exactly is a "moral revenge story"? What is moral about revenge? It is certainly not viewed as moral from a "Christian" point of view - or a legal one either. It is law of the jungle - and Carter is a big beast! He is a vicious amoral thug. But you don't mess with him and his - there's an element of respect involved, as you suggest. By revenging his brother - he makes himself more unassailable. I don't think Jack would understand the distinction. He does seem genuinely shaken seeing his niece (daughter? Possibly.) in the porn film - he appears to cry! So there is something human there - it would be strange if there wasn't. Of course he doesn't give a tinkers about anybody else's niece or daughter. Jack isn't a psychopath - he's a hardened criminal who will kill if he has to and doesn't care about the consequences to innocent people. He is the British equivilant of Richard Stark's Parker. The villians in Get Carter are just as bad. They all deserve locking up or topping. It's the little people yopu sympathise with, I think. Alun Armstrong's horribly used little guy; Britt's trapped moll; the sexually frustrated landlady. Following Jack is a wonderful ride through a vividly painted time and place. But Carter himself is the ultimate anti-hero. Apart from his cool - there are no redeeming features. Last edited by GRAEME; 02-03-2008 at 02:48 PM.. |

Hmmm. I disagree that Carter has no love for his brother. There's the scene where he goes to see the body the night before the funeral and holds his dead brother's hand...Or when he gives Doreen the money and offers psuedo fatherly advice about boys....Or the anguished fury in his voice when he says, "I'm the villain in the family!" (the implication being his brother was a good guy who didn't deserve what happened to him)....And of course there's the great scene when he sees Doreen in the porno, figures out what must have happened, and cries. Carter could never rise to the top of the British mafia, because, despite his ruthless charm, ultimately his worst enemy is himself. With a weakness for women, he repeatedly sabatoges himself (and his relationships with others), first by sleeping with his brother's wife and later his boss' girlfriend. A pal of mine asked me if there was more than one version of "Get Carter" (i.e. different edit). A version he recently watched on cable in the U.s. did not tally with his memory of the UK original. Anybody know ?

![]() The IMDb records a few variations in the 1971 original # Due to deep accents of some characters, the film was partially dubbed for the US release to allow Americans to understand what the characters on screen were saying. # The UK cinema release was cut to get an "X" rating by the BBFC with the stabbing of Albert edited to remove some shots of the knife. Director Mike Hodges later admitted that "The less you see of the knife, the more effective the scene is". The cuts were waived in 1993. # According to director Mike Hodges on the R2 commentary, when ITV first showed the film, the phone sex scene had been shortened. Steve |
