Me H is Late was the fourth virtually dialogue-free film scripted
by Eric Sykes. The plot revolves around a quintet of luckless undertakers
charged with moving a coffin from the 26th floor of a skyscraper to
the church in time for a funeral. The pallbearers are led by chief
bearer Eric Sykes and amongst his colleagues are Freddie Starr and
Bob Todd.
The film’s cavalcade of cameos begins instantly with handyman
Mike Yarwood causing the pallbearers to forgo using the lift and attempt
the whole task along a narrow stairway. Meanwhile in the street below,
traffic warden Jimmy Edwards signals hearse driver Terry Scott (and
a bagpipe playing Roy Kinnear) to move the vehicle off double yellow
lines. As the pallbearers descend they encounter neighbour Richard
O’Sullivan and a particularly perplexed Paul Shane who has a
coffin in his front doorway and piano playing Norman Collier ascending
past the window.
The pallbearers decide to give up on the stairs and head to the roof
to lower the coffin using the window-cleaning winch – only it
ends up on the roof of a passing truck driven by James Hunt. The coffin
is quickly dislodged as Hunt passes under a low bridge. After a brief
excursion on Kenny Ball’s Routemaster bus they arrive at church
just in time to hear real-life couple Dennis Waterman and Rula Lenska
exchange marriage vows.
