Plot Synopsis

Adapted from Anthony Gilbert's suspense novel Mouse Who Couldn't Play Ball, this predictable thriller with musical numbers ended Jessie Matthew’s star career in films. The film concerns miserly old Everard Hope (Eliot Makeham), who teases his relatives about his last will and testament. That night he is murdered. His money goes to an unknown relative, Dorothea Capper (Jessie Matthews), a chorus girl. Before Dorothea even arrives at her deceased benefactor's mansion, outraged relations make numerous attempts on her life. William Gordon (John Stuart), a police detective on the case, arrives to investigate the case and manages to save Dorothea’s life more than once, and succeeds in winning her affections in the process. Further murder attempts on her life inside the house are foiled; the killer turns out to be the housekeeper (Beatrix Lehmann).
