Plot Synopsis

Beautifully photographed version of the novel by Henry de Vere Stacpoole. Two British children, Emmeline (Susan Stranks) and Michael (Peter Jones), are shipwrecked on a Pacific island in the company of old sailor Paddy Button (Noel Purcell); who later dies on a drunken binge. They grow up (Jean Simmons, Donald Houston), fall in love, have a baby and try to escape in a home-made boat. They are picked up. The plot is beefed up by storms, a fight with a giant octopus, and two evil traders (James Hayter, Cyril Cusack) who force the boy to dive for pearls before killing each other off. A box-office rather than critical hit, but a masterpiece compared to the 1980 version.
