Plot Synopsis

The Clouded Yellow is a taut and convincing British thriller in the Hitchcock vein, the plot winds pleasingly around the murderous goings on at a stately home and culminates with a lengthy, suspenseful chase across England.

Trevor Howard is an ex-secret service agent who takes a job cataloguing a butterfly collection and finds the task more arduous than anticipated. David Somers (Howard) soon finds himself involved in a murder plot when he helps unbalanced Sophie Malraux (Jean Simmons) defend herself against accusations that she killed an unpleasant handyman (Maxwell Read). Convinced of her innocence, Somers helps her escape from jail using his skills as a secret agent and plans to help her flee to Mexico aboard a ship leaving from Liverpool. The pair lead their pursuers an exciting chase across the countryside, from Newcastle to the Lake District and on to Liverpool. As the fugitives finally try to catch a ship leaving the country, everyone including the real murderer arrive on the scene.
