Plot Synopsis

Strangely affecting allegorical drama based on the novel by Barry England. Robert Shaw and Malcolm McDowell virtually carry the film between them, one symbolic of instinct while the other represents rational thought. The desolate landscapes, excellent action photography and taut dialogue help boost the tension in this highly unusual offering from director Joseph Losey.

The story follows two escaped convicts (Shaw and McDowell) pursued by an omnipresent police helicopter as they attempt to evade capture in an unnamed totalitarian country. The fugitive duo encounter journey across untamed desert and snow-covered hills, however, their fate has been sealed since they broke out of jail and a final confrontation with black-clad forces awaits.
