Supernatural thriller based on the novel by Laurence Meynell. This
entertaining and atmospheric low-budget feature rises above the standard
expected from the much-maligned b-movie.
A couple down on their luck, struggling novelist David and his patient
wife Jean, unexpectedly inherit Four Winds, a country home in Witherley
that seems the ideal location for David to complete his long-awaited
book. The house is rumoured to harbour a resident family ghost named
Patrick, a mischievous poltergeist. Jean immediately falls in love with
the old house but David describes it as giving him the creeps.
David is bored by the country life, feeds his alcoholism by spending
much of his time in the village inn and subsequently becomes attracted
to curvaceous blonde Valerie, a divorcee who's typing his manuscript.
But Valerie rejects David’s advances because he’s married
and penniless. He hatches a scheme to kill two birds with one stone;
murder Jean, sell the hated country home and start a new life with his
mistress. Sadly he fails to take into account the actions of a protective
Patrick, who foils his attempts on Jean’s life each tie. After
surviving two attempts on her life, Jean becomes suspicious and flees
to London to confront her solicitor with her fears. When she later returns
home later that evening she discovers Patrick has taken revenge in her
absence.
